thornberry was a mando in that fight. you can't blame the champion.

& as has been mentioned...he was "technically" a worse challenger when he faced ottke too.

my pick would be richard frazier. part time boxer-part time police officer personally handpicked by roy jones jr so he could look good. pathetic fight.

not something to be proud of. :-(

That bum Steve Frank who challenged Hopkins.

That kid who faked a low blow in the 2nd round vs Tapia @ super flyweight and started screaming on the canvas like a new born baby.

Speaking of mandatories, Julio Cesar Chavez being the #1 contender in 2000 for the 140 lb. WBC crown was another joke.

Chavez hadn't made the 140 lb. limit in 28 months. The lowest he had been was 144 for the rematch with De La Hoya. His previous 2 fights, which were at WW, he lost to Willy Wise and beat Buck Smith.

A 38 year old shell of Chavez had no business being in the ring with Kostya Tszyu, let alone being the ****ing mandatory challenger.

Another legend who had no business getting a title shot was 47 year old Roberto Duran, against William Joppy.

    Disgusting.

Ricky was not worthy of a title shot...but he wasnt absolutely shocking.

Good workhorse kind of fighter who was pretty durable.

    The WBC.

Jose Suliaman said he was "embarrassed" and took "full responsibility".

A year later, the WBC rated the 38 year old shell of Julio Cesar Chavez as Kostya Tszyu's mandatory.

Pure rubbish that was...He argued that because he drew with MAG like 3 years before that he deserved the no1 ranking for some reason.

Of course uncle Jose gave it to him.

A lot of people gave Kostya **** for taking that fight..rightly so...but he would have given up his only bargaining chip if he had refused to fight Chavez. It was mostly the WBC's fault.

Tszyu was looking to unify the belts, which he did a year later.

I don't blame him for taking the fight.

Steve Frank, who challenged Bernard Hopkins for the IBF title had lost his fights from the only 2 reasonable opponents he faced, came in with a 15-2-1, 5KO record and lasted a mere 24 seconds.

So actually RJJ, Hopkins and Ottke all had worse opponents as Calzaghe's worst if you think about it :think Not really what the TS had in mind I guess. :yep

How did 7-0 Leon Spinks get a shot at Ali? I mean, he won, but still...what was he doing in there in the first place?

    He wasn't even 7-0, but 6-0-1 :D
But Ali fought even worse opponents like Coopman and London in a few of his title defences.

Tim Tomashek (34-10) was literally dragged out of the crowd to fight Tommy Morrison for the WBO heavyweight title as a replacement for Mike Williams.
