It doesn't really matter how meaningful Floyd's retirement was. Once he announced it, he had to lose all rights to the lineal title. It's as simple as that.
you can relinquish a belt but you don't give up lineage if you take an extended break the way he did. He was gone for less than 2 years. If Lennox Lewis unretired and tried saying he was still Heavyweight champ, i'd understand that argument but it was a Floyd retirement. It's hollow and insincere like Floyd Style Drug Testing.
Even if you take it away from Mayweather after he retired a large portion of fans considered Mosley as the man in this division after beating Margarito, CBZ even listed Mosley as their lineal champion in the welterweight division so Mayweather has already regained it anyway. It's subjective anyway.
Dude, he retired. Simple as that. There isn't a "2 year window to retract" clause when it comes to retirement in boxing.
Pacquiao was a heavy underdog against Oscar, granted he was old and drained. Also he Cotto was an upset as well. Who would you rather he fought?
This makes sense. But why does the title must be vacated. What if there should always be a Linear Champ?
its vacated. retire and you lose your title. kinda stupid to even defend it. Btw, who's the top Welterweights right now?
that's not how lineal champs work. Judah was it and lost to Baldomir. Baldomir lost to Floyd Floyd retired now people can say Floyd regained it when he came back, but you can also argue he didn't But when Floyd was retired, he Cotto lost to Margarito Then Margarito lost to Shane making him the man at welterweight. (IDK if he was lineal though) Floyd beats Shane. So it's either Floyd is the lineal champ or it's vacant.
