I'm not sure the money is what people mean when they refer to boxing's suffering as a sport. It's the amount of genuine interest and exposure the sport gets in the public eye and the recognition of the amazing athletes which participate in it. When Floyd sells PPVs, there is money generated but at times the casual fan can be alienated. A sport that generates sales but everyone at the same time hates watching after they so hopefully paid for it is not, in my opinion, a sport that is doing well. I personally like watching Floyd in the ring, but even with the accusations of ducking in the past aside, the recent nonsense this particular fight has espoused coupled with Floyd's generally egotistical rhetoric has swallowed itself up while the casual boxing fan world moved on, confused by a conflict that made no sense, and that's everyone's fault in negotiations. Promoters have to reach out and interact more with the non-boxing world in creative ways in order to make boxing relevant to societal culture again. It will always remain a solid sport, but for the rest of the world to notice a few things have to change. - Credible, single championship titles - Effectively enforced Mandatories - A Comission-oriented solution to the ambiguity of drug testing - An effective regulating body to regulate negotiations without the dominance of promoters and self-interested handling of the sport protecting fighters and avoiding good matchups - Regular tournaments and elimination bouts to more easily determine the best of the multiple divisions - Business reachouts to other commercial sectors to advertise the sport, generating revenue and creating a larger consumer base
Since he's the biggest draw in the sport and still not reaching some ridiculously high level like what two old geezers expect then it's the entire sport that's ****ing up. According to THEIR stupid AZZ theory manny, Cotto, etc are all bad for boxing, too, since they definitely aren't selling anything close to what they "should". Those other guys aren't selling as much as they "should" either, so where's the standard for them? The reality is that someone who's making 2-2.5mil PPV sales per year is good for the business side of boxing. That's greater than what anyone else is doing in boxign currently.
Haha this is the only post that has made any sense in this thread. Well done! :happy Finally, a guy with some brains haha
He is the biggest scum in boxin...no doubt. He has continually kept boxing in the main stream, his style is defensive, but he's attracts people to his PPV events....He brings the drama boxing so lacks at times....He is mostly good for boxing. BULL ****ING ****! The lack of interest in boxing, the lack of discipline in the American HW, and the corruption from Don King is what led to the downfall of the HW division..... ...The Klits just have a style that isn't appealing to Americans, but they are not the reason the HW sucks....Blaming them is dumb. The greatest promotion company ever! They have their contraversies, but nowhere in the magnitude of Arum or King....And they are not LITTLE...They have more power than Arum. Also they: 1. Were the ones that started matching their best with the best. They hardly protect their fighters the way Arum and King would...as a result it made Arum start matching his fighters with the best, just to keep up. 2. GBP pays their fighters, they don't rip them off like Arum does, or King did...What is Arums share for Pac fights??? 75%??!!!!! GBP takes care of their fighters...Like they gave Leavander Johnson's family 2 million dollars, even though he wasn't a GBP fighter, just fought one. GBP is better than any boxing promo co. boxing has seen. Fans....FANS are the worst. Fans who trash boxing/boxers.
UliUli -- Good rant. Golden Boy probably shouldn't have been on the list. They started off great and did lead to a lot of unifications. Lately, with the Diaz decision and the protection of Ortiz, they are losing some steam. I hope they don't turn into the other guys but you know the phrase about power corrupting, right.
