Can someone identify the cross guard fighters who were “switch hitters” in terms of reversing the configuration as and when it best suited?

I think Norton always crossed his left over (above) his right.

That static configuration still left him vulnerable to the left hook - and that deficiency was no better highlighted than when Ken faced Earnies Shavers.

Gene Fullmer did the reverse cross guard for lack of a better definition

Cheers Rob. That description is just fine. Perfectly acceptable boxing parlance. :D

Kenny's gameplan against Shavers was to tire him out on the ropes and inside. He was actually scoring there nicely up until he lost the gamble tragically.

Crossed armed defence itself has plenty maneuvers against the left hook, thought you have to be conscious not to exit outside with just your elbow flared, as the angle might still let the punch pass by. "Holding the phone" is much safer then.

Not the best strategy for Ken (or for anyone vs Shavers, lol) but I totally agree, Norton was landing his own share of heavy leather.

Great fighting off the ropes albeit brief. I recollect that it was a short, tight left hook that initiated Ken’s spiral. For the time it lasted, Earnie himself was absolutely on point.

Feeling that Ken had been avoiding him until then, Shavers apparently trained the house down for that fight - and he looked to be in terrific shape.

One might wonder how Futch would have prepared Kenny for this fight. That one and Foreman for that matter.

Norton was such an athlete. Always had that high school star spark in his eyes. Extremely endearing energy even decades afterwards. Thinking about the tests he had to overcome later in life really makes his story all the more bittersweet.

    Going the distance. Always.

    Nice.

And interesting that despite facing the BIG 3 punchers, Ken was never absolutely sparked out - and he did cop their most powerful shots imo.

Even after Foreman unloaded those 4-5 hellacious punches at the end, there was Ken struggling to his feet - I don’t believe he was counted out - rather, the fight was stopped.

Norton had great courage and lived by a uniform code set for himself just as much as he set it for others.

Brilliant that he and his son Ken Jr reconciled before it was too late - as a pair, they had been through far too much together to just flush it down the toilet.

    Re: "Favorite cross-armed guard user?"

The BEST version I have ever seen on films belongs to Archie Moore. My FAVORITE to watch is George Foreman, in his second career, so I voted for him.

I love that the shoulder roll can be considered a cousin of the crossguard employed while angled at the centreline.

    Bump.

Shout out to Max Schmeling. Thankful to everybody pointing to me his efficacy using it. Such an underrated tool against Louis.

Also Dereck Chisora using it to turn the cloak against Joe Joyce and Otto Wallin.

While I felt like Archie is my favorite,I think I enjoyed some of Norton's static display with that inside fighting too.
