I could listen all day to a broadcast of Bernstein, Kellerman and Foreman. Mauro Renalo is absolutely awful! Only guys worse than him would be Gus Johnson and Stephen A.
I dunno why Gus Johnson was moved over for Mauro Ranallo. Gus came in for a lot of stick, as I recall, but I really enjoyed him in the play-by-play (he hit the right balance of ingenuous enthusiasm and slightly above casual knowledge, for me), whereas Mauro just plain stinks. Prime HBO are tough to beat, but Lampley was too comfy in his last decade in the gig and Lederman's scorecards were routinely abysmal. Roy was phoning it in in the later years, too, a "yeah he is" here, a "heh heh heh" there, ZZZZZZZZZZ. Whether HBO had continued in boxing or not, all those farts needed to go. They were shot. Malignaggi's color work is the beacon of light in a sea of crud right now. His scorecards are bad, but scoring isn't really his job, and, while he can be accused of loving the sound of his own voice, he justifies it with plenty of cutting insight and always brings a touch of class to Sky's miserable commentaries.
You just beat me to it Nick was great add Manny steward & of all people Randall Tex Cobb. Many years ago was a big fight on cant remember who & we were all talking about it looking forward to it. Well my cable went out the afternoon of the fight due to 18 wheeler accident. I told by buddy Joel I'd have to miss it . Phone rings & voice says you have won tonights star prize color commentary on the fights Guy gives great commentary on the fight Lady says "is your commentator good " I said " Yes fire Lampley & get him" Then I heard that laugh like a bull seal It was Tex & his wife surprising me He commentated on all the fights & he was really good Joel had called him & told him I was going to miss it. That the sort of great guy Tex was
I would take anybody on earth over Mauro Ranallo. The absolute most annoying commentator in the history of sports. Full of hot air and corny one liners. Just a total loudmouth who detracts from the event. But yes Gus Johnson does hit the right balance of enthusiasm. And when something exciting does happen his delivery sounds organic. I disagree that RJJ was phoning it in, he was still great imho. Lederman became insufferable though. Not only his biased head scratching scorecards but also having to hear him explaining his nonsensical scoring in that high pitched shriek every couple of rounds. Though for some reason I liked when he went through the rules at the beginning of the match. Lampley was reaching the end of the road no doubt about it, but I would still prefer him over anyone at Showtime. Have to disagree. Paulie is annoying, he talks too fast. Yes he does provide some much needed insight but it's hard to listen to. While he does provide insight but he doesn't do it succinctly. His choice of words and the length of his explanations don't come off well. He just goes on and on talking about something random that isn't typically relevant to what is happening.
Like hes just done a huge line of cocaine and is trying to convince you to open a restaurant with him.
Reg Gutteridge and Jim Watt were a fantastic combination. The mutual respect between them was obvious and they were brilliant at giving each other time and space. Regardless of which sport it is, Sky's presentation these days is just about shouting and bawling in an attempt to convince the viewer he is watching something absolutely staggering every minute. I shudder to think what they are about to do with their Cricket coverage now Botham and Gower have let go.
If I could choose I would pick: Lamps Steward Malignaggi There are an alarming number of clowns who are simply "sports broadcasters" calling big time fights these days.
