Whilst I'm aware that this topic has probably been done to death during this forum's history, I'm a pretty new member, and I feel like belonging to this forum has increased my boxing knowledge. I occupy the awkward ground between casual and, just for example, someone like IntentionalButt or BSC80, whose boxing knowledge embarrassingly eclipses my own. So although I know well who Anthony Dubois or Terry Flanagan are, I usually have no idea when someone mentions a bantamweight they really like, or even welterweights or heavies outside the top 20. I've never seen Breidis or Mikey Garcia fight. So as you can see, compared to most of this forum I know little. So with that in mind, I'd just like to see who the knowledgeable, frequently witty, often enlightening, occasionally ******ed members of this forum would call their favourite current boxer, and why. For what it's worth, mine is Golovkin. This is due to his old-fashioned-yet-deceptively-technical style, his power, his ridiculous out-of-ring charm (in-ring too - the wry smile he gave Canelo after his silly bolo punch made my heart melt), his class, his chin and the fact that I really want to bang a Kazakh girl I know, and she loves GGG as much as me. (She might be in the UK for the rematch if it happens. Never, ever, ever again will I be so invested in a fight as I will be that night. I'll post a pic of her if I can figure out how.)
I am also a semi-casual who doesn't know most of the lighter weight divisions fighters. Can't believe you have yet to see Mikey 'The Mouth' Garcia fight, the guy is a tool but fights at a very high level. Speaking of high level, make sure you don't miss Usyk/Breidis this weekend. Golovkin is also my favourite active fighter. We casuals love knockouts/aggression always and forever! I also like Spence, Gvozdyk and the Charlo twins at the moment.
I really don't want to think of myself as a casual. I'm pretty well versed in boxing history, I just don't have a TV, nor the means to watch fights on ESPN/BT or whatever. I did sign up to BoxNation, but other than Golovkin - Canelo I thought it was money poorly spent so I cancelled. I watch my boxing mostly the day after (if it's on YouTube) and watching fights the next day is never as good. I'm more likely to watch a SRL fight than I am a Charlo fight. Anmoyingly, I was excited about the Usyk-Breidis fight but I leave for China on Friday, for 26 days. Gonna be a while till I can see that one, given the restrictions on internet they have. Also, as if to illustrate how much of a casual I am, I thought the Charlos were just brothers, not twins.
Huge fan of Vasyl Lomachenko, I love the way he conducts himself inside and outside the ring - good mix between respectful and confident, same as when he fights he has awesome defense, offense, and great fun to watch. He backs himself to beat anyone and it's not just him talking trash. He picked a stupid hard fight as his pro debut, lost it narrowly and dusted himself off and got on with it - clearly taking on board what happened and making sure it won't again. If there is ever an fighter who shows how meaningless a "0" on their record is, it's Lomachenko.
That's really interesting - are you a Kiwi? Over here (UK) the people I talk to think Joshua is going to walk over Parker. Obviously he won't, though in an earlier poll I think I predicted a stoppage, a la Takam. I really like Parker though, a good guy I can get behind.
Actually I adore Lomachenko. My favourite after GGG. My P4P#1. I spend quiet afternoons watching his fights. I also have a weird affection for Kell Brook.
no Canadian... I just been followed parker since his debut... he needs to get back down to the 230 in weight though. the 240+ is no good for him hes losing his advantage... parkers hand speed when he was at like 230 was amazing.. looks slower now.
Golovkin is my top pick, when I started boxing I saw GGG as a fighter that was respectful, always ready to fight the best, humble and a real hard worker, inside the ring he was a finisher, a skilled fighter and a extremely talented guy. Now he is a little past it and it bothers me that he has left his roos behind as a fighter but he's still my favorite. After GGG is Lomachenko, I've been following him since the olympics, the fact that he always wants the toughest fights, that even after losing to Salido he took the fight against Russell who is underrated and extremely talented, like GGG he is a humble guy who talks in the ring and inside the ring well, he has the potential to be the best fighter on the planet.
Fighters I generally root for AJ Wilder Haye Eubank Golovkin Lemieux Saunders Kirkland Thurman Porter Spence Brook Broner Salido Loma Rigo
Hmm, Kazuto Ioka just retired so there goes my numero uno. Boy, this question has become impossible to answer for me over recent years' happenings (Floyd, Wladimir, Paulie, Wonjongkam, Shumenov, John, etc). Shout outs to Donaire, Dawson, Diablo, and Roman G. If the Kessler comeback talk plays out, he would shoot among the top of the list for sure. Have to be honest that a few of the new cats growing on me are: Canelo (he's a beast, and a rockstar, and folks are blinded by actual hatred for him), Spence (he's a beast, great demeanor all around from what I can see), Jack (because I don't think I've ever been more wrong about a fighter), and Srisaket (called for a Srisaket vs. Suriyan domestic bash for years, like the style most Thai fighters bring, and earned more than my respect for the Roman fights).
Keep an eye on Regis Prograis. 20/0 17 KOs. Kid's got skills If he gets by Postol, should get the winner of Imam/Ramirez. Lotta room @ 140 now.
