I think it's important to remember there's more to being a commentator than being unbiased. Bernstein is a good guy and is very objective, but he puts me to sleep. Can you imagine him instead of Lampley calling Khan-Maidana? Lampley: "BIG RIGHT HAND FROM MAIDANA! KHAN IS TREMENDOUSLY WOBBLED! HE'S IN SERIOUS TROUBLE! HE'S FIGHTING RATHER THAN HOLDING! TOO BRAVE!" Bernstein: "Up, he got him! Khan is definitely hurt! It was that right hand that got through. And Maidana just....keeps coming! This is his chance. And Khan tries to back off, but he's not holding, which is surprising, because we figured he'd hold anytime he got caught. And more punches from Maidana. His chin is really being tested here." :dead Lampley yells like his son is the one in the ring, and Bernstein talks like he's reviewing a fight on replay with some friends at home.
I voted for Lampley, best in the business as far as I'm concerned. He is a lot like a referee in sports, people usually only remember the bad calls, not the good ones. I don't believe he is always biased/negative. Remember the Macklin/Martinez fight? Merchant was going on his rants while Lampley was trying to get the commentary back on track, and focus on the good things that were happening in the ring.
I think it says something that I couldn't even notice that being his intended role :conf just my preference I suppose.
Gus on showtime is easily the best at the moment... for me anyway. So much passion and excitment in his voice. He also spots some interesting dynamics every now and again.
Steve Albert is not even mentioned here and he is by far the most assertive of the above mentioned in the poll but since he's not there... I have to go to a guy that commenattes, not analysis which are two different things so I pick the youngman Max Kellerman...
Teddy Atlas for me. He's very honest, doesn't give a **** about others, but most importantly he knows a great deal about boxing. Al Bernstein comes in on second. Can't stand anyone over at HBO.
Jim Watt for his 'Bang on the Chin!' catchphrase. There's nothing like a well timed 'Bang on the Chin!' from old Jim.
Al Bernstein. He's just a very intelligent, unbiased observer who gives the listener additional insight into what is actually happening during the course of a fight.
Al Bernstein is the best IMO. The worst is the Australian commentators with Andy Raymond...just woeful!!
Jimmy Powers beats Don dunphy. Iam old school,Listening to Jimmy was kinda like listening to Red barber. He was just so smooth,&delibrete. Also the great announcerwho did the Archie Moore vs Yvon Durelle,I forget hia name, but he was a all-time great.
I like Max. I think he is personally neutral but has the HBO agenda to promote. He's heavy on the mellowdrama at times, but again.. its TV.. so I guess you get some of that. Still, the Showtime guys are more "down to business" which I like. The HBO team is great for TV, Lampley always makes me laugh... Steward is a boxing genius... Merchant is a drunk old man with a lot of bias. Roy Jones was OK but talks about himself too much. Lennox has the IQ and personality of a rock. Big George was always funny and I liked him. Tarver is always good. Would like to see Jermain Taylor start commentating.
