    Duran Barkley is my favourite.

At the age of 36 & 25lbs above his best weight Duran had been brutally kayoed in his last major fight 5 years earlier.

He was taking on a big, hard punching MW who had just knocked out Tommy Hearns to win his title.

At 6'1 the menacing Barkley towered over the old Duran, this looked like a horrible mismatch & in the 5th round Barkley landed a huge left hook which spun Duran around but he didnt go down.

Duran couldnt box at distance against his taller opponent, he had to wade through the storm to land his own shots but he did. In the 11th he knocked Barkley down & went on to win on points in the 1989 Ring magazine fight & upset of the year.

Felix Trinidad against Ricardo Mayorga. Tito had a 2 years and 5 month layoff. Trinidad landed 63% of his shots (290/460) and 66% of his power shots (218/329).

    But he mentions Moorer.
Nice post SJS,but big George doesn't come close to Erik Morales shaking up the world against David Diaz. And you're forgetting that a quarter century after his first crack at a world title,Joe Bugner outclassed Bonecrusher Smith for the right to hold aloft the cherished WB??? belt.

No Vitali in that list. FAIL

Look at it all the way through

Vitali retires due to a succession of severe injuries, the last being a snapped anterior cruciate ligament, a career ending injury that will take at least a year to heal alone. People think he's done. He transforms from boxer into politician, trying to make things right in his home country of Ukraine because he has beautiful soul like that, always helping children in and out of Ukraine.

Problem: he cant fulfill his political aspirations due to fierce political rivals that cant appreciate the greatness of having a Klitschko in the congress, heck, the Kbros are the best thing to come outta Ukraine ever, why not let them rule the country? Pinoys are gonna do it with Pac.

So Vitali thinks, if I cant make my fellow countrymen happy, then i'll make the boxing fans happy by returning and filling that gigantic void I left in the HW division that nobody else could fill, and he starts working out again, most people thinks his injury-ridden body will fail him once more, that he wont be able to perform at the same level again.

His friends suggest him to fight a couple tune up fights first, to shake off the ring rust, see how he feels etc. Instead he decides to challenge the reigning WBC world champion and consensus number 2 fighter in the division, Sam Peter. A champion with only one loss at the time (against Wladimir, the division's king) and great scalps on his resume like Maskaev's and James Toney's, not some bum who had been handpicked to ensure that Vitali looked good on his comeback

After coming off a 4 year lay-off which had been characterised by a succession of serious injuries, Vitali should have been made to look rusty. He should, at least, have had to go to the well to pull out a victory, Instead he demolished Peter and won every minute of every round without even having to break too much of a sweat.

Vitali came back better than ever, and did what people like Foreman who was considered more of a side circus show and a paper champion (Foreman did nothing noteworthy aside from a couple of valiant losing efforts and his almost fluke victory over glass jawed Moorer in his comeback) could never do...

Vitali effectively returned to become the most feared HW on the planet

A title he keeps to this day. Vitali retired on top and returned to the very top he left, which is a true mark of greatness. I know, a movie should be made, but Vitali's story ain't finished yet. The Klitschko history book, is a book of pages filled with glory after all.

I think realistically Leonard-Hagler has to be the greatest comeback of all-time. He was only out for a year or so but it was a significant year with everything else that happened in the division while he was gone, and up to the point of beating Hagler on the comeback trail a few years later. Hagler was such a dominant champion it didn't seem that Leonard would really be able to beat him, some still say he didn't, ask Hagler lol. It really was overcoming such a great feat for Leonard. He wasn't as big and strong, but he was fast and hard to catch, a true mini Ali fighting his own Frazier.

George Foreman's return is the greatest comeback STORY ever and one of the greater accomplishments ever in boxing. One might argue that Ali's comeback after draft dodging and being suspended from boxing is greater, as he came back and won in Zaire, but Ali wasn't 45 after a 10 year lay off in a completely different heavyweight division than the one he left. Just sayin.
