    Any particular reason?

I've noticed that while the poll results are almost neck and neck, most of the people who've posted (not a slim majority as in the poll, but most) have articulated arguments for it being Barker.

Those who saw Macklin giving the better performance against Martinez, what were your reasons? :think

Good thread. Pretty equal, but if I had to pick one I'd take Macklin.

I'm considering making a separate thread/poll asking which one would win if they finally did meet head to head now. There were many threads about the match-up - especially in the Brit forum - back when it was scheduled, and rescheduled, and rescheduled. :yep A little fresher perspective might be worth examining, now that both have given a try at the top level. It would be more of a contention crossroads match than the culling of top prospects it was once to have been billed as - so it's exciting for different reasons and the two would likely be as desperate and hungry to beat each other now on the doorstep of thirty than they would have been had they met as planned in their mid-twenties.

Barker, and clearly at that IMO. With Macklin I, like Marnoff said above, had the feeling that Martinez was in control almost all the time (though pressured and having to work hard).

With Barker, I actually thought he stood a risk of losing after some rounds. It looked like Barker had figured out his rhytm of attcking, defending and countering and you could see that Martinez didn't like that one bit. Barker was patiently following him with the jab and made Sergio counter by feinting. Sergio would take the counter-bait and go forward. Barker would then either block the punches or take a step back and counter with his jab, just like Pavlik started to do in the middle rounds against him.

The way Sergio then adapted was very impressive.

I never saw this kind of sophisticated approach by Macklin. He did well by not getting stopped sooner, because he was open in his attack a lot of the time.

Macklin vs Barker is very close though. I could actually see Macklin winning that and would bet on him (don't have the time nor the space to elaborate, but Barker's high guard and not extreme power would play well into Macklin's aggressive, active approach, like vs Sturm).

Damnation, MM has pulled within a vote. :patsch

Where are all these people presenting their arguments? Or is it all just paddies still delirious from St. Pagan-raper's Day and randomly clicking their man's name just for giggles?

    IB on that topic.

I said from the start that Macklin was the perfect fight for Sergio. He likes and does well against pressure fighters which is what Macklin is.
Barker had a better jab against Sergio then Macklin. They both gassed though. (Barker said it was because he couldn't run enough because of his hip but thats now fixed)

If they fought i think Macklin would win he throws a lot of good punches and quality pressure on opponents. Just think he could KO Barker and don't think Barker could KO him IMO

Macklin for me. Macklin actually made Sergio fight. It made Sergio wonder what he was going to do to beat Macklin, and made me wonder for the first half of the fight whether Macklin might actually pull it off.

With Barker, I never thought victory was in doubt for Sergio at any point in the fight. It was really just a matter of whether Sergio could hit him often enough and cleanly enough to eventually stop him. Barker got some nice counterpunches in here and there, but there was never enough offensive activity from Barker to make me question how Sergio was doing on the cards.

I think they both did similarly well against him. They both caused him problems he had to contend with early before fading after the mid rounds.

They both boxed different though so it's a hard comparison to make, Macklin took the fight to Martinez more imo whereas Barker was happier to wait and pick his shots.

Both fights I saw varied scorecards mainly due to the early rounds not being clear either way but Serg definitely took over the fight in both matchups after the halfway mark

Did some snooping, and yeah - lots of Irishmen among the votes for Macklin. :yep :!:

So it's clear from the poll results (and from the atmosphere in the arena on the nights that each challenged Martinez...and from the activity in each RBR thread) that MM is significantly more popular and has a larger and more passionate following than DB. Based on actual arguments presented in this thread, the majority of people who are actually offering rationales think Barker logged the superior effort against Martinez - yet the poll is a dead heat. Therefore we can say that the "popularity inflation" effect is something that must be accounted for.

This leads me to believe that a poll asking who would win h2h would be in the eyes of most objective analysts a 50-50 proposition, but will in numbers show a landslide for Macklin...maybe even as exorbitantly high as 80% to 20%, or 90% to 10%. :think

:huh That is basically the inverse of what a lot of people have put forth as why Barker bothered him more. Like, almost word for word with just the names swapped around.

If that's how you feel, though - hey. :conf It's all just a matter of opinion anyway. :good

I think Macklin had the better performance..... BUT

I think Darren barker showed me something.... He kinda gave Dmitri Pirog a piece of the blueprint to beating Martinez

    Now tied!

View Poll Results: Who gave the Wonder Man more difficulty?

    Darren Barker 39 39.80%
    Matthew Macklin 39 39.80%
The same amount of difficulty, not too much between them 20 20.41%

Voters: 98. You have already voted on this poll

....I really don't think we've heard from even close to 39 of those who saw Macklin causing Martinez more trouble - hell, maybe not even 9. Without going back and actually tallying up the posts from people stating their cases, it's easily been far more than 50% for Barker.
