There's a difference between a guy who slowly but methodically comes at you sort of like Pavlik and guys who are right in your chest and don't give you anything to work off of. Johnson would be all over Calzaghe. He won't just be methodical. He would be right in his chest.
Yeah, and he'd be eating shots for 12 rounds too. This isn't Chad Dawson now, an inexperienced type that gasses it and has a questionable chin. Calzaghe can deal with the inside work, and at mid/long range he has the beating of Johnson very easily. He can do it for 12 rounds unlike Dawson which is the key difference.
And you don't think Johnson would be throwing also? This is a guy with a granite chin and a great work rate/stamina who doesn't let up. I have no doubt in my mind that Calzaghe would not want to face Johnson. It would be all wrong for him. I also have no doubt that the last man Roy Jones wants to face at LHW outside of Tarver is GJ.
He would, but there is a huge disparity in speed and overall boxing ability. We saw this versus Dawson, and the only thing that let him back into the fight was Dawson's stamina and chin. They won't even come into play against Calzaghe, because he has a proven chin and unquestionable stamina. I don't think Joe would have his track shoes on like Dawson, he'd just go to war which would make a great fight and the handspeed would be the difference IMO. From range Joe's jab would control things too. We shouldn't lose sight of what Johnson is. A great competitor that has been unlucky at times, but he is on his zimmerframe now and has always been just short of elite.
Tarver should pick up a few rounds early and hold on for a close fight, i wouldnt rule him out too soon
i think against a really tough fighter like johnson, stamina would come into question, look at his fight against another tough fighter sakio bika at the end of it, calzaghe was clearly gassed, lost at least 3 of the last 4 rounds, and bika was in much better shape at the end of it than calzaghe his stamina is definitely *not* "unquestionable" also to answer the op's question, i think pavlik would be the least problematic out of the 3, dawson is young and fast and skilled and tarver presents a different set of issues, he has physical advantages like height and reach and he is defensive, and somewhat awkward
It's Pavlik. Dawson can't be considered til he has finished unfinished business with Glen Johnson, and Pavlik is just better than Tarver just now. Plus Pavlik is a bigger name with bigger support, and he's top 10 p4p, the fight just makes far more sense for Calzaghe in terms of money and prestige. I think he would give Joe more trouble than Dawson would.
Dawson for me. As ive said before i dont think Pavlik has the variety to compete with Joe and i think it would be a fairlt easy victory for Joe. Tarver is nothing special. Dawson is tall, rangy and has youth on his side. I still think Calzaghe would probably UD him but he is the pick of the bunch.
Pavlik - and it's a fight I would love to see happen :happy . Hell I'd give eons of praise to Joe just for taking the damn fight. For me it's the stylistic matchup that presents the most intriguing aspect of this match - and wondering how Slappy could possibly come away with a victory. I'm struggling to imagine it :think I sooooooo hope we can see this fight sometime next yr.....:deal
Dawson would be a tougher fight saying the fight goes 12 rounds. I believe that Pavlik and Tarver would have to stop Joe in order to win. Dawson has the speed and skill to beat Joe over 12 rounds
Dont think that you will have to worry about praising Joe, cuz he aint taking the fight with Pavlik or Dawson, HOWEVER it wouldnt shock me if Tarver were to somehow pull off the upset that he would fight him, or even Hopkins in a rematch if he won vs Pavlik.
