You may have noticed that Bill started a similar thread yesterday or the day before - but without a poll. There seemed to be a fair bit of support for Calzaghe on there so I thought I'd put it to a poll to gather wider views.

Ultimately though it was inspired by last nights BBC five live boxing radio show where they stated Calzaghe rated above Lewis easily... and was the best British boxer post war.

    Take a listen 1.44 to 1.52.

After being subjected to both those things, and then wanting to throw my PC out the window - I though I'd get a wider forum view just to gauge a wider consensus.

    See above.

Last nights BBC boxing show encroached this very subject stating it was clearly Calzaghe, and a thread similar was started without a poll the day before yesterday.

    You may now apologise.

Some of the comments from last nights BBC boxing show.... these may be paraphrased to some degree (apologies - I will change or delete them if they are grossly wrong) but the link to the show is above so you can listen for yourself...

The comments made on the show got a bit of a roasting in the main forum as well... link here...

One of the guys on the panel also promotes Jermain Taylor, and Glen Johnson.

It just all got my back up a bit, otherwise it's normally a good little show! :good

You know full well what the polls will turn out like. You aren't a novice around here, do you really need 100% to make you feel good?

    It was pretty pointless.

I listened to that as well and they were taking it a bit too far lol.

There was a decent point made that Lewis toiled through much of the 90s as the big names fought each other while leaving Lennox on the sidelines.

While Bowe and Holyfield had a trilogy..Lewis was rebuilding from the McCall defeat. Holyfield was past his best and Tyson was shot by the time Lewis got to them. (similar to Hopkins and Jones for Calzaghe).

What was LL's best win? Ruddock..Golota..

I rank Calzaghe no1 greatest at 168 & he`s 1 of the top 2 to have ever fought at the weight in a H2H basis IMO... the other is Jones.

I rank Lennox no9 at HWT all time.

    Resume`s are fairly even.

    JC is unbeaten.
    LL has been KOd twice.

Both are good technical boxers but Joe is more adaptable mid fight & seems to get better when things arent going his way... the big guy likes things his way from the get go but is capable of coming back strong himself tho not to the same extent as Joe.

    LL became no1 at HWT.
    JC became no1 at 168 & 175.

LL never cracked the top 5 p4p list.
JC is at least no3 & no1 on a lot of respected lists currently at 36 yrs of age.

All in all... Calzaghe is better than Lewis.

See TFFP even big fans of Joe agree it was a bit much - you should have a listen to it!

You never know, maybe those presenting boxing on the British public broadcasting service (some who read, and post on here) will see the overwhelming general consensus on this issue(in online boxing communites), and not flood the airwaves with Calzaghe hysteria/mania - stating that he is easily the Greatest British boxer ever etc etc. There is always hope. Do you get where I'm coming from now.

And this doesn't even take into account the way lhw greats like Foster and Spinks would dismantle Calzaghe with relative ease.

No, not really. Since when has anything we ever said on here made a blind bit of difference to anything in the real world?

It was a pointless thread, I suspect it made you feel really warm inside to match up Calzaghe in a poll you knew he'd lose easily. Next up Hatton vs Sugar Ray Leonard.

    I voted Lewis.
And it was an easy choice..
I think Calzaghe didn't leave his comfort zone for most of his career and was happy beating guys he knew posed no real threat to him.
Since Lacy things have changed obviously, but too many nights spent fighting bums at the Cardiff Ice Ring have damaged Calzaghe's legacy, IMO.
Lennox is pretty much the opposite, fought and beat the best in their own back yard. A boxer that deserves a lot of respect.

No, that is untrue. Steve Bunce (who's appeared on the show) himself posts on here, and often gives "the guys on the Internet" a mention.
