    Obviously Charles ranks higher.

He ranks higher on the ATG Heavyweight, Light-Heavyweight and p4p lists.

I think a lot of Gene Tunney he was an experienced fighter and one of the best boxers during his era and beyond. Very Few heavyweights had his speed of hand and foot and Tunney had some power also, not until Ali have we seen a man that could move like Gene. That being said Ezzard Charles had the better resume at that weight...Charles beat and fought competitively with many ATG heavyweights and was never embarrassed

This one is close but Charles gets it.

I've actually voted Tunney (although p4p Charles for me all day long), but having read the comments on here, am swayed somewhat. On reflection, I think I may have voted for the wrong man. Tuhhey's HW resume is based largely on the Dempsey fights, Charles' record at HW is deeper, his wins over (admittedly faded) Louis and Walcott, for example, are solid, for starters - and a longer reign as champ too in terms of defences.

Tunney was a great, great fighter and remains very impressive on film, moreso than any of his contemporaries or predecessors in my opinion.

Those who label him a "bum" or anything less than extremely exceptional obviously feel the need to boast of their ignorance.

puts it into perspective, give it to charles. tunney has a decent resume but greb was shot (and small) and gibbons was very small for heavy. risko win is solid but charles takes it on the walcott, ray and exciting satterfield win

    FACTS:

-Charles has 10 top 5 Heayvweight wins. Only Ali and Louis have more.

-Charles had 8 Heavyweight Title defenses. Only Louis and Ali have more in the pre-alphabet era.

If this is not a top 5 resume...you can go stroke yourself. :nut

Greb and Gibbons were Light-Heavyweights though. I know so was Maxim, Bivins (arguably) and Satterfield.

But take away Greb and Gibbons from Tunney's list and it leaves it without much, if any, depth to speak of.

I have included these fighters (Greb, Gibbons, Maxinm, Bivins) on the list, because the fights took place with one of the combatants over the light heavyweight limit, and because they were fights that would have advanced the winners standing in the heavyweight class.

    I think that is fair.

It is fair Janitor, but these guys were smaller men (and the fact they were basically over the weight Light Heavy matches anyways), and if you take them away, Tunney's resume is very bare.
