That's how I see it, imagine how embarrassing it could be if Pacquiao fought Pep for example. Compare that with the fact that I reckon Spinks would beat Roy Jones.
I agree with this. It's not that I don't recognise how incredibly good Roy Jones was, I just don't see him snuffing Spinks out over 12 or 15 rounds. Spinks was too good, too awkward not to land his combinations, and you'd have to think he'd be capable of knocking out Roy considering how fragile he has shown to be in recent years. Jones was able to time and predict his opponent's movements, but how do you interpret a guy who gives you so many different looks like Spinks did? One minute leading with a left hook, the next he's throwing lead right hands to the body. Always feinting, always moving his head. He could knock you out with either hand.
IMO there isn´t that much between them but enough to say that Pac ranks clearly higher. Why? Overall I think Pac beat more accomplished, greater opposition. Spinks has the Top2 wins though with his wins over Holmes but Pac has the better depth here. Also, moving up in weight means more when you are smaller. The higher the weight the less it means - which doesn´t mean what Spinks did wasn´t a feat, it was one, he was one of two lhw champions who also won the hw championship - the other one beeing Fitzsimmons - that´s huge. Both were dominant, Spinks perhaps slightly more but Pac´s longevity - especially with his style - outshines Spinks. So, Pac got the better resume, the better accomplishments, was less dominant but had better longevity. Got to be Pac for me.
Good post, and I agree. Spinks was better at his peak, but if I were to make an all-time list, Pacquiao would probably rate higher.
Spinks dominated the LHW divisions over many years without losing a single time and I would say that he entered the division during one of its best (if not the best) era. Then, he climbed up to the heavyweight division to win the most prestigious title in boxing... against an ATG like Larry Holmes of all people. Holmes was getting old, but he remained highly competitive afterward. Fact is : Spinks only lost to Tyson.
All in all it's what you value. Dominating a single division versus never really being proven the best in a division but being a champ in many divisions. Who had the better quality opposition? I'd say it's pretty close. Longevity, has to be Pacquaio, but he doesn't have that iron fist of dominance over a division at any stage of his career that Spinks has at LHW. Spinks is more versatile against different styles and Pacquaio is brilliant at fighting come forward pressure fighters I agree he fought a much greater big man, but how much did that version of Larry Holmes have left? Carl Williams had already most likely beaten him the fight before (I need to score that 1 and I'd suggest viewing that fight yourself This is a reason I don't give that much props for Manny's weight hopping, the only time his opponents were significantly were bigger, was against Cotto, Margarito and Clottey and 2 of them were forced to come down in weight. His longevity is more impressive to me
