If Floyd was to retire after dominating Maidana, who would you rank higher between the two fighters? *If you rank Whitaker higher, then who does Floyd have to fight in his remaining three fights to go above Whitaker
Pernell did have a lot of weak opposition but theres a few things he has that put him above. He had much better defense than Floyd - and thats not a knock on Floyd. Pernell was just that good. He crushed Oscar when Oscar was in his prime and Pernell was near the end. Old Pernell did much better against prime Oscar than a prime Floyd did against an old Oscar. He also beat Vasquez and Azumah Nelson (2 guys that don't get respect because they were more substance than name value), and beat Chavez easy. Chavez was overrated, but the manner in which Pernell crushed him is unbelievable and the manner in which he beat Chavez is enough to put him high. Those wins are more than enough to outclass Floyd's competition With the exception of Marquez (undersized and tailor made stylistically), literally all of Floyd's wins come against the following 1) paper champions (Hernandez, Manfredy, Corrales, Baldomir, Judah, Gatti, Ortiz, Castillo) 2) washed up fighters past their best (Oscar - who isn't any good in his prime in the first place, Cotto, Mosley) 3) padded record fighters with hype jobs by the media with no actual substance who NEVER beat an elite boxer ever (Hatton, Canelo, Corrals) 4) overrated people on the p4p rankings (Corrales, Canelo, Hatton) 5) Bums in general (Canelo, Ortiz, Guerrero, Corrales, Baldomir, Mitchell, Ndou, , Hatton, Pep, Juuko, Gerena, Vargas, Corley, Bruseles, Chavez, Sosa) Floyd would have to dominate the best at 160 to be ranked higher than Pernell. Manny is a shell, Bradley is good but not great, and there isn't anyone at 147 to elevate his status. Beating Lara at 154 won't be enough either
Its unfair to say Whitaker has better defense purely from a similar fighter they have faced. Vernon Forrest beat Mosley twice, does that make him twice as good as Floyd? You make a valid point but i think calling those fighters bums, overrated, hype jobs and washed up is harsh because if he hadnt fought them then people would claim that he ducked them. He is in a no win position. He called Mosley, Cotto and many top fighters out for years and got no reply, only when they realized they would make more money fighting Floyd were they interested.
