Calzaghe at his best was better than Ward. He was slipping by time he faced Jones and Hopkins, for all the talk of Bhop and Jones being past their best I thought Calzaghe showed clear signs of slippage as well. Ward has better wins though and may rank historically higher. Froch is a great win, and Kovalev, although I think the first fight was a blatant robbery gives Ward an edge. Kovalev won that bout going away imo. Interesting discussion on who rates higher. Both were mentally tough, both could make in fight adjustments. I just think Calzaghe's volume and natural size advantage wins h2h
Ward for me. Green, Bika, Miranda, Abraham, Kessler, Froch, Dawson and Kovalev is a very strong resume in a relatively few number of bouts. Calzaghe built a solid resume enough too (not as solid as Wards in my opinion) over a very long career but he had long periods where he fought no names in meaningless WBO title defenses that padded his record but meant very little. The Hopkins win (a deserved win too for Joe) adds a lot to his resume despite the closeness and the awful quality of the fight. It’s a pity Joe didn’t step up earlier because as the Lacy and Kessler fights showed he was very formidable on the world stage and could have mixed it up with anyone. A Jones Jnr fight from 97-2000 would have been epic and could have happened easily enough if Joe wanted it as Ward did with Kovalev. Risk vs Reward. H2H between the two I’m not too sure actually. Both found ways to win and could make adjustments mid fight. Both were excellent fighters.
