Morales also beat two fighters Barrera never beat, Junior Jones and Manny Pacquiao. In terms of accomplishments I'll give Morales the edge here but it's very close, if it's based on who's better in the ring then Barrera wins it simply because the third fight(In my opinion) was a clear victory for Barrera. The first two could've gone either way, too close to call.
Marquez was underrated for SO long that he's now being overrated, he's a great fighter with great skills no doubt about it but I rate Morales and Barrera higher. As a matter of fact I thought Barrera beat Marquez in their fight, not many might agree but it's just my opinion.
In my view, MAB should have been awarded the victory in all three of his bouts with Morales (with the 2nd one being closest).
I guess people tend to put Barera over Morales because of the versatality Barera showed in outboxing Prince Naseem, and how easily he did it.
This thread comes up every week so forgive me if you've heard this responce before: In my opinion a person's ranking should be a measure of his accomplishments coupled with his ability. (with more emphasis on accomplishments then ability) (BTW: Ability I consider a measure of a fighters overall likely hood of victory, it is an amalgamation of skills like foot work, technique, stamina, versatility etc.. and intangibles like desire, work ethic and mentality.) ---------- Barrera Titles: 3x WBO Super Bantamweight champ, WBC featherweight champ, WBC Super Featherweight Champ, and IBF super featherweight champ. Lost to: Junior Jones twice (never avenged), once to Morales, once to JMM (also never avenged), and twice he has got his ass kicked by PAC. His notable wins: Beat Kennedy McKinney in a life and death war (think this was the first BAD), took the series win over Morales, beat Hamed pretty convincingly, and beat kevin kelly, paulie ayala, and Johny Tapia. So basically he's a three division world champion with notable wins from the beginning to late middle periods of his career. His best victories are over Morales and Hamed. With the Hamed victory probably being his best victory because of the way he beat him. Problems being that he lost to Junior Jones twice in his prime, to Morales in his prime and got TKOed by pac in his prime (or at least pretty close to his prime). EM Titles: WBC Super Bantam weight champ, WBO super bantamweight champ, 2x WBC featherweight champ, WBC super featherweight champ, and IBF super featherweight champ. Lost to: Barrera twice, PAC twice, David diaz, and Zahir Raheam. Has wins over: Daniel Zaragoza, Junior Jones, MAB, Kevin Kelly, Paulie Ayala, Jesus Chavez, and PAC. Is a three division champion. Lost close decisions to MAB in his prime (or one in his prime and the other close enough to his prime for the purposes of this thread), lost to Raheam and got knocked out twice by pac in his late career. His most impressive win is over Pac. ------- So how does it all line up interms of greatness. Comparing ability between the two is a pretty dicy affair because in essence you have to decide how to evaluate Barrera's ability, given that he was a completely different fighter in the second half of his career. You could give him a lot of credit for having the versitility to change but he did lose a lot of his desire to win, which given greatness is what we are considering pretty much negates any props given for versitility. At all points in his career Erik morales dominated the intagibles (even in catagories like effective ring general ship). Barrera probably nics him in terms of skills though. I'd give the overall edge in ability to Morales but not by much. Things start to get a little more obvious when you consider how their resume's line up in terms of accomplishments (some of you might be suprised by this by the way) MAB probably fought the better comp while in his prime but he also had four losses while in his prime, one was by split decision to EM, three were not close and one was by technical knock out. Morales' prime losses were to MAB. Both of his losses were close losses. And he never touched the canvas (officially) in his prime which is saying something given his fighting style. And I feel that his win over PAc at the end of his career was more impressive then MAB's win over Hamed. Barrera I has to be given credit for his two wins over Morales but to me thats not enough to get MAB past the fact that he lost three times convincingly in the prime of his career. So my ranking is Erik Morales then Marco Antonio Barrera.
Maybe. At the time Erik Morales was considered to be the better boxer. It was definitely the first time that MAB showed he was much more then just a JCC type come forward brawler.
Very Close but MAB deserves more credit. After all he beat EM two times to one. EM was more exciting in my opinion although MAB wasn't a boring fighter by any means. EM just had that chip on his shoulder that made him the warrior we all know....I think EM brought that out in MAB as well. But They had similar careers but MAB was able to best EM by a hair by winning more fights in their trilogy.
