    As for why

Tunney looked unbeatable at heavyweight aside from one dubious knockdown to an all time great in dempsey. He was a master of his style and very durable. He had good speed and underrated power. I had underrated him but after learning and seeing more I think he's the best heavyweight of the 3.

Charles: sublime skills and a very good heavyweight resume altho he was somewhat inconsistant at the weight losing to some guys during his prime that he would never avenge. Ranks higher atg but 1 place less at hw.

Patterson: youngest ever heavyweight altho it came by way of a vacant belt (i believe tyson is still the youngest boxer to "win" the heavyweight championship?) Some good wins but few great wins, quite inconsistant also and was truly anhilated on a few occasions.

I think the very worst thing anyone can say about tunney is he should have lost his series to both greb and dempsey but that itself is questionable and either way they are still great victories to have on a resume. Plus he's one of the few boxers to defeat every man he fought.

-Irrelevant. And Joe Louis had over 40 lbs on Charles more than Ali or Liston enjoyed on Patterson. Walcott/Charles is about the same as Ingo's advantage.

-Ali and maybe Liston whom Patterson went 0-4 against are the only ones you could argue over Marciano, Bivins, or Walcott.

-Chuvalo should be on. And Charles record could be argued a remarkable 13-3 against HOFers if you want to go that route.

I don't think its better. Layne, Valdez, Satterfield, and Quarry are give and take. Baski and Valentino is on the level of Chuvalo and Oscar...etc. Remember Valdez even blew out Jackson.

-Maybe the Hall of the Fame will wise up to you way of thinking and induct more than. Despite never winning a title, you could argue Bivins alone has a better HW resume than anyone on Patterson's win resume, including Moore.

-More successful? You are arguing agianst the numbers now. More wins against contenders, higher winning % against contenders=Charles. More Title defenses=Charles.

Stack these top wins up: B=Hall of Fame

    Walcott x2
    Bivins x2
    Louis
    Maxim x3
    LayneX2
    Satterfield
    Baski
    Valentino
    Oma
    Holman
    Ray

    Compare it to:
    Moore
    Ingo x2
    Machen
    Boneava
    Chuvalo
    Jacksonx2
    Cooper
    Harris
    Slade

Really? Really? Moore was a great HW. Ingo? Excellent HW but in the Hall of Fame for Koing Patterson, really. Machen well past his best but nice win, Cooper a solid hot/cold contender but never elite, Oscar and Chuvalo were tough limited guys, good wins. Jackson was like them but with no power, good enough wins.

Joe Walcott a great HW Champion. Bivins a great HW, stand in Champion for Louis and top 10 mainstay for years. Louis a declined great HW and lineal Champion who would still put together a good win streak. Maxim a top notch spoilder, LHW Champion and HW top 5-10 mainstay, Layne, Valentino, and Baski was like Oscar/Chuvalo but with better wins, Satterfield hot/cold but all time great puncher with some great wins over top contenders and HoFers, on par or better than Cooper.

Charles also beat Elmer Ray, who is better than anyone Tunney ever beat at heavyweight, save perhaps a well past his prime Dempsey.

Can someone please tell me why we are including Charles' wins of Light-Heavyweight when this is a HEAVYWEIGHT ranking...?

Tunney's career is harder to fathom.
Ezz is, in IMO, in a top 5 pvp all-time slot position and Floyd certainly
    can't aspire to that!
But, at HW, Floyd's accomplishments are many.
I've not researched this but has ANY fighter (HW or otherwise), after being bludgeoned into submission come back and, arguably, been a better fighter
    AFTER losing his title!?
Show me a bad loss after Liston 2.
Ali 1? Bad back, but scrapped well, no way he could have beat Ali at
    his best on any night.
Ali 2? End of his career and showed his meddle WELL!
He had Quarry's number in both fights sans his passivity.
We've all seen the Ellis fight.
In closing, I don't see a '70's' Floyd getting run out of the ring by
    a Norton/Lyle/Shavers.
Was it not only his fractured mindset that stopped him from reaching even
    greater heights than he did?...............

Patterson would be ranked first for me. He has the most depth at this weight youngest every heavyweight champ and first two time champ. Charles would be second and Tunney third.

Charles has to be first although Floyd has a terrific shot at defeating him head to head ... who knows how to rate Tunney and his five heavyweight fights ?

"Faded?" Patterson was 26 and 27 years old, smack in the middle of his prime.

Case can be made for Charles but I don't see it. Patterson too good at his best, really under rated by the casual fan. His fights with the likes of Quarry when he was in his late 30's really show how good he was, just undersized and had the misfortune to fight Liston and Ali at their best...maybe the fastest combination puncher in heavyweight boxing history
