I'm really not trying to be rude, but do you no who Greb, Langford and Fitz are? It's not a dig or anything, they are obscure names if your not into boxing history. I cant place Ali any higher than 8th on my list for reasons discussed
Duran for me. Ali was the greatest heavyweaight. Duran was the greatest lightweight. But, Duran was the more complete fighter. Ali never went to the body cause he never had to. He also never fought anyone faster than him. He fought one way and was very successful at it. Duran was moving up in weight and was constantly adapting. Sometimes he was the bigger man, sometimes he was the smaller man. He overcame all kinds of adversity. To casual boxing fans Ali will probably rank higher, but if you really break it down its a very tough call and I think Duran edges him.
I'm sorry, but you should study a little before you post things like that. Even Ali himself said that Ray Robinson was the greatest pound for pound fighter of all time. Ali was great and I rate him high, but Robinson & Greb definitely need to be higher. "To me, in his time, and even today, pound for pound, when they say Sugar Ray Robinson was the greatest fighter, pound for pound, meaning that I imagine if he was a heavyweight, fighting the same style, he'd be the greatest. I would have to admit. I would have to say yes. I have his fight films, I've watched the films. You have them. That man was beautiful. Timing, speed, reflexes, rhythm, his , everything was beautiful. And to me, still, I would say pound for pound, I say I'm the greatest heavyweight of all times, but pound for pound, I still say Sugar Ray Robinson was the greatest of all times." --- Muhammad Ali
Langford, who beat Gans at LW, and went on to be considered the best HW at one point. Harry Greb, a Middleweight, beats every HOFer he ever fights, including wins over Tunney (outweighted by 20 lbs), Kid Norfork, and Micky Walker Fitzsimmons, a KO expert who knocked out fighters from Middle to Heavy including wins over Corbett, winning titles in the MW, LHW and HW divisions. Sorry but i cant have Ali over these guys
Did you actually watch the Norton fights? Norton was robbed on at least one of those fights and arguably two of them. Liston may very well have been in his mid - late 30's when he fought Ali. Not trying to discredit Ali but these are facts, which have to be considered. But I can honestly say in the Foreman fight that I never seen anyone take the amount of punishment Ali took and it was an amazing win. As was the 3rd Frazier fight and the Patterson fights so it's a close call. But in terms of actual boxing ability Duran had more. Ali had speed, but never was a complete fighters in the senes that Duran was. For example Ali never threw many body punches at all and he never really had a great, great defense because he would go straight backwards. In a similar vein as Roy Jones, he could get away with these flaws due to his incredible speed, athletism and his ability to absorb punishment, but these are still deficiencies even if they were compensated in other ways. Duran never had any of those flaws and in a p4p sense he had significantly more power. Duran's major flaw was partying too much during fights which occassonally meant he'd go into the ring in less than ideal condition which led to a couple of losses he may not have incurred otherwise, but that said a loss is a loss and he doesn't deserve a pass for not being prepared because it was his job to be ready to fight. But when he was prepared, there really was none better.
