Who rates higher Willie Pep or Sandy Saddler

Scoreboard is scoreboard. If the ref allows it, do it. I have no problem with that. You even admit that Saddler made Pep fight his fight. That is what the greats do.

 

We will have to disagree.

Pep fought just as dirty. It wasn’t Willie being a choirboy and Sandy being a mugger, lol.

And Saddler absolutely sparked Willie — easily — in the first fight.

I will stand by my case for Sandy.

 

I’d curious for more clarification on what you mean in referencing Willie at lightweight (it seems you might be saying you rate Pep higher P4P because he did better than Sandy at 135?).

I think Saddler holding a belt at 130 (and never losing it, retiring as champ at 130 and 126 simultaneously) eclipses whatever Pep did at higher weights.

And Sandy had some handsome results at 135 — stopped Joe Brown and Paddy DeMarco (although he also lost two split nods to Paddy) and also fought Jimmy Carter to a draw. Had some other good results above feather, and that’s not even getting into Saddler crushing LuLu Perez, who put Willie away in two.

(To be clear, while I favor Sandy both at feather and P4P over Willie, I certainly see the argument for rating Willie higher in either case and don’t take issue with you or others seeing it that way, just want a better idea of what you meant about lightweight.)

Pep gets all the press about being so great and Sadler is rarely ever mentioned unless it’s in relation to Pep. Meanwhile Sadler won the series 3 wins to Peps 1 and even stopped him.
Pep was great but Sadler obviously even greater should get more credit.

 

Pep rates higher for me and was the greater fighter. Head to head is a different story. Saddler had his number.
