I rate late 60s Ali as the best Heavy ever.

Coming off from 2 losses, and a 20 month inactivity period.. sure, he was in the greatest of shapes to go up against the world recognized champion..... ****.:patsch

I actually went for Spinks because he seemed the best opponent at that point in time. But I actually allways liked Tubbs. Great hands, great boxer.

I'm looking forward to my next debate with some Tyson gobshite, when he gives it the usual spiel, then i can retort with "the best guy he beat was TUCKER!!!" :D

Thomas already looked like a shell. In his prime would have done better. Tubbs too fat. Tucker just a methodical fighter with only basic skills and size. Holmes worthless at that point. Spinks made to order for Mike. Williams not worth mentioning. It got to be Douglas then. Nobody else got the same kind of mobility, head movement, and fire Douglas got. He got skills he got all of that. And what more he got confidence. I don't see Mike (Spinks) with that confidence and he the superstar. All them flatfooted, unmotivated, or sluggish. None of them got what Buster got.

Either Tucker or Douglas were the best Tyson fought. I think Tucker was slightly better than Douglas, however Douglas had the best performance of ANY of Tyson's opponents.

I agree Douglas was the man on that night, but Tucker put in a very credible performance against Tyson and then later in his career a very credible performance against Lewis, doing well against a peak Tyson and Lewis shows Tucker to be no bum. I voted for Douglas but Tucker was my second and a close one these two guys are underrated by people here.

I'm not taking anyway from Tyson, but was Holmes in the ideal situation to face Iron Mike?

None of it says sh*t for Tyson. Sadly the Tyson groupies that used to inhabit this forum have all either grown up or moved to ULTIMATE FIGHTING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    No

But he was still Larry 4ing Holmes.

The guy who would go on to beat Ray Mercer some years later aged 100.

Indeed, but it could be argued that he had 6 active fights just before fighting Ray Mercer, and was a seasoned vet. I'm not saying the version that faught Mike was completely ****.. but I do know what being seasoned is about, Larry just wasn't that before the Tyson fight.
And ofcourse, he was Larry Holmes, and the win was a good one.. but a tad overrated by the Tysonites.

Douglas was definently the best guy he fought during his reign.
Pinklon Thomas or Tony Tucker were the best fighters that Tyson beat during his reign.

Who did Tony Tucker ever beat to deserve such respect? Was it because he beat Douglas? Well, then who did Douglas ever beat to deserve such respect? Was it Tyson?

I just don't get it. Douglas was a good fighter the night he fought Tyson. He could have been a good fighter anytime he put his mind to it. He just wasn't consistent enough to be listed as Tyson's best opponent.

Tucker may have been a top 10 heavyweight of his time, but don't let his record fool you. He wasn't fighting anyone.

Most people think that Holmes beat Spinks in their rematch. Holmes has the best resume of the people I've already mentioned. Holmes is the man.
