Iirc (which is less and less likely as I age) I scored the first 4 rounds for Mercer and the last 6 for Lewis.

Lewis really struggled in all honesty. Wonder why he says Holyfield was his toughest opponent.

Lewis won it though was a competitive fight Lewis was landing more shots but Mercer would try to steal with a few hard shots but imo not enough to win. Here's how I scored it:

    Lennox Lewis vs Ray Mercer

    Round 1 10-9 Mercer

    Round 2 10-9 Lewis

    Round 3 10-9 Lewis

    Round 4 10-9 Lewis

    Round 5 10-9 Lewis

    Round 6 10-9 Mercer

    Round 7 10-9 Lewis

    Round 8 10-9 Lewis

    Round 9 10-9 Mercer

    Round 10 10-9 Lewis

    97-93 Lewis

Mercer should have been awarded the W. He won the fight

6-4 Lewis, the most I can give Mercer is a draw.

One of those fights where I never quite saw the controversy. Lewis won quite comfortably. Feel people may give Mercer rounds which he doesn't necessarily deserve only on the basis he did much better than expected.

I originally had it a draw. Still think that was the best outcome. It was a draw type of fight.

It was a somewhat close fight, but the last time I watched it about 5 years ago I had Lewis slightly ahead. I think it's a matter of taste. In some rounds, Mercer was landing the heavier and more damaging shots (I believed he had Lewis' nose and lips pretty bloody and rocked him a few times), while Lewis landed more in general and was more accurate with more control over the pace.

It was one of the rare occasions when Mercer was both in good shape and stuck to a good game plan without falling asleep at the wheel. That, plus the fact it was one of Lewis' toughest fights and it's no wonder the match is a topic of discussion and interest.

Mercer did stick to a good game plan I’ll grant him that. Was he in really good shape though? He dominated the first half of the fight and tired in the second half. He was 14 pounds heavier here than he was for Holyfield in just his previous bout. I think had he come in a little lighter he would have won conclusively.
