Could have very well won a world title in the HW division, had he not fought Jirov the way that he did. That said though, he was an exciting heavyweight who was making a name for himself. Cold he have become a world champ? Vote and discuss.

    Yes he could.

He beat shot Bert Cooper and Gonzalez by KO

Also beat David Izon, Robert Davis, DaVarryl Williamson, Monte Barret, Vassiliy Jirov.

He had good power and some skills, but his chin was suspect.

The tragedy vs Jirov ended his championship dreams. But keep in mind that before 9th round Mesi was leading 7-1, easily outboxing him till he got hit to the back of the haed and KD. Then the two more KDs and he was almost stopped in 10th.

I think Mesi could've beaten Maskaev, Lyakhovic, Briggs or 2006 Rahman. At least he had decent chances against any of them.

Totally agree. I didnt want to mention Jirov because i know he was never the same after and pretty much ended his career after that fight. He had a brain bleed similar to what Prichard Colon is dealing with now, because of accidental fouls meaning punches to the back of the head. I agree as well Mesi could have beaten anybody in the division and beaten fighters like Maskaev and Ruiz to become a hw champion.

I'm glad he retired undefeated ans seems doing well now. However, he could have fulfilled his dreams to win a belt in an era when Klitschkos still weren't dominating the division, if not that Jirov accident.

Man Jirov was a tough cookie, he took Toney to the brink and in the HW division would have caused trouble for anybody, even Klitschko. But this just shows what a prospect Joe really was. To come back from adversity and pull it out in a tough, tough fight. He could have beaten a soft Wlad back in the days when corey sanders was a bit too much for him..Who Knows.:deal

I remember watching him on TV when he came over to the UK as an amateur for an England vs USA duel. He scored a first round knockout over one of our guys Harold Senior who like Mesi would also later join the pro ranks too. Senior only had 17 fights as a pro but he was durable and he fought some pretty good guys and did the rounds against many in sparring too. He was never stopped in any of his loses as pro. Mesi demolished him with a big right over the top IIRC.

Mesi packed a big punch and had fast hands. Always a potent combination. His chin wasn't the best though. His fight against Monte Barrett was on TV over here too. Some felt it was controversial but I thought the decision was fair.

He was a good, fan friendly boxer. Glad to see that he still has his brains and is doing well in Buffalo. Very smart of him to quit once he got hurt, but I believe he had a hard time believing the brain scans. I think he fought after he was diagnosed with brain issues....but eventually he stopped.

If I recall correctly Joe went into politics once he and more so his father finally accepted his injury.

Most definitely.... Best Italian American HW since Marciano. Nice power, and decent skills as well. Definitely could have been a titlist.

Definetly could've become a titlist, especially during Vitali's lay off.

I liked Mesi and remember his commentary work on espn classics

I think Jirov and Barret shed light on his limitations but if maneuvered right he would have been interesting vs Byrd or Ruiz

A Brewster fight would have been a war

Nope. Chin was not good. Should have lost to Barrett and Jirov.
