I taped this fight on a cheap 'Ampex' video back in 1985 while watching the great Lawrence Holmes defend his WBC title against David Bey on HBO in March of '85.... I'm doin' a review and making a copy onto a newer tape for copyright / quality ensurance reasons............. Bey was gallant; early on anyway...... But Larry Holmes being the ultimate Ring General in his day was just too skilled and too talented for David Bey....... In my book, this was the LAST time in which Larry Holmes displayed true greatness as a heavyweight champ.... Come the fights with Carl Williams and Michael Spinks, it was CLEAR that Larry Holmes was aging and slipping........

Anyone else remember this fight on HBO?

i did see the fight and still have the poster .. Hand grenade hands was doing ok until Larry turned up the pressure.. Larry was almost at the end.. i agree..

Bey was a friend of mine , he worked construction in Nevada for a while and i used to see him hangin around Dons trailer if a King show was on at caesars or mirage.. I remember him almost beating TYrell Biggs on a cut at the old Hilton Car park.. when Tyson beat Smith in the unification series.......

Why did Bey fade so quickly after the Holmes fight? Based on the ability he demonstrated against Holmes, Bey should have remained a contender for several more years.

Bey was a victim of KFC and Fish and Chips, etc......... He was a slob......... He had a weight issue........... He trained hard for "Page and Holmes," in 1984 and '85, and made some money.......... I saw him fight Bones Smith in '86, Bey was making money and content during the time...... Bey is / was kool, but also a "Ding-Dong" junkie...... He was a fat-ass late in his career.... He gave a full-on ****..... Cheers.......

I saw this fight & Bey fought okay for the first 5or6 rounds & then got whaled on after that. I would not say that this was a great fight for holmes. Bey was not a very good fighter... he was slow and ponderous which left him open to the holmes jab & straight right hand. the holmes-bey fight was alot like the holmes-jones fight in 1980.

Considering Holmes was age 35 and worn with numerous fights throughout his career, I thought he was great here.... TRUE! Dave Bey was made to order like a pizza from Pizza Hut for Holmes, but Bey proved Gallant in '85..... Also, many "GREEN" dudes can train hard and do well in a top fight with a serious bad dude, but the color green will eventually surface....... It did for Bey....... Bey's skills and talent lasted for "5" rds...... After that, he was a punching bag for Holmes........ Holmes TKO 10 Bey...........

I remember this fight but not too well.... I recall Bey as a tough as heck and willing but limited fighter ability wise... Was Bey thumbed in this fight? Bey had some modest success and then Holmes started to take command. Did it go the distance? Gotta go to youtube and check it out because, like I said, it was back in 1985 and the details of this fight are murky at best for me now.

Oh, thanks Bill, Bey was stopped in the 10th! Was it from his eye being swollen shut?

When ever i ran into David in the late 90's he was always walking with a nasty limp like he needed a knee replacement or hip replacement too, i did run into him at the Thomas & mack a few years back when Holy fought Moorer in a return fight , he had a gorgeous woman on his arm and was dressed it top to toe versace.. with a classic walking cane.. he was pimped to ****, hell we almost pissed ourselves laughing , David was so much fun, he just said , i got out of bed and felt funky like dat... But that limp made him walk very badly indeed.. i hope he is ok....

NO! Bey was eating Holmes' right hand in round 10 like a series of Big Mac's from McDonald's.......... Bey was on wobbly legs and the ref stepped in and did Bey a favor........ Holmes was on his way to killing Bey.....

Bey had just upset Page and a lot of people thought the 35 year old Holmes was rip for the taking by a big, young , strong, hard hitting contender. However, Holmes still had to much in the tank and took over the fight. Bey never really came back. He did always have a fine woman or two around him, even back then.

I think Holmes kinda' stopped training hard after his KO of Bey in March '85......... Styles make fights, and Carl "The Lie" Williams was more technically skilled and much faster then Dave Bey ever was, so therefore it is not hard to understand why Holmes had so much trouble with a guy like a green but fresh Williams......... I thought Holmes looked like he just crawled outta bed with his wife Diane prior to the opening bell for Michael Spinks to cap-off '85........ Larry Holmes claimed a sore back from a motorcycle incident near his house during his summer training for Spinks....... Either way you slice it, Holmes was regressing from fight-to-fight after his victory over Dave Bey earlier in the spring......

    Awkward question Bill.

I thought he had noticably slipped in the Witherspoon bout. I thought he was still great vs Cooney and Cobb. Cobb was an awkward fighter even if a bit limited but Holmes made him look like an absolute plonker.

I thought a good chunk of Witherspoons energetic showing was attributable to Holmes slippage.

Depends what you class as great i guess. TBH i thought he was ordinary by his standards vs Bey and had quite a bit of trouble along the way. His GREAT heart and sheer will to win came thru as always. It was readily evident vs Witherspoon, Smith, Bey and Williams.

In the buildup to the fight, Holmes played it up that it was his last fight. They really played that angle up. It should have been. Holmes had struggled against bonecrusher after a yr. layoff and people actually thought bey could pull a leon spinks due to Holmes agae and bey beating Paqge. NOONE expected him to be tore up and ko'd by Larry.:viking
