I saw it. Clottey WOULD HAVE WON the fight if he hadn't injured his hand. Period. Margo was fortunate that Joshua injured the hand. A rematch IS in order and would be specfuccintacular. As long as Joshua takes care of business on Saturday night, of course. :good
You don't think I know that? :rofl Man, everytime I post I have to look at this ****ing ****. I can't wait until its over.
thank god for this thread! ive been advocating clottey on these boards and nobody has believed me! he is the most underrated welterweight out there. clottey practically swept the first half of the fight with margarito until his hand broke. he went to his corner and told them he broke his hand. from then on there was a clear drop in his punch output. theres a difference between making excuses and having a reasonable reason for a drop in performance. clottey deserves a rematch. clottey is a master of position and range. i see clottey schooling judah with judah taking a few early rounds and then fading as clottey skillfully counters from behind his high guard. and watch for triple left hooks lol.
Cotto was also winning four of the first five rounds and other fighters have had success with margarito early. Margarito isn't pernell whitiker defensively. But can you keep up with him and keep him off of you the entire fight. That is what makes Margarito tough to beat. Clottey couldn't keep up with him for 12 rounds.
http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/boxing/news/story?id=3510607 This article on ESPN said Clottey broke his left and hurt his right against Margarito. Quotes are below. This content is protected
That makes sense also. You have to give Marg credit for being so relentless. He just keeps on coming.
I'd never post on this site or show my face again before using a nasty avatar like this by choice. :barf I blame Teddy Atlas!
I agree. Clottey used a very tight defense, stood in the pocket and landed beautiful counter left hooks, upper cuts and right hands. Margarito could not penetrate his tight defense at all in the 1st 3 rounds. Clottey then broke his left hand which took away his best weapons (left hook and left upper cut). For the rest of the fight he stayed in his tight defensive shell as Margarito bombed away on his elbows, shoulders, arms, etc. Margarito landed very few flush shots, but simply won on workrate because Clottey essentially stopped throwing punches. If he didn't hurt his hand, Clottey would have won by wide UD. I have always said that Clottey would be a tough fight for anyone and actually gave him a 50-50 chance to beat Cotto prior to Cotto/Margarito.
Actually it was later revealed by himself that he did not break either hand. It was in the interview before his fight with Corrales 3 months later. He wouldn't have been able to fight so soon had he broken both hands. Clottey and Judah are very similar in that both are front runners and gas within 4 rounds every fight even ones where he doesn't get pressured in.
Threadstarter, To show you how close this fight was, look at the attached video. At about the 1 minute mark of the video, they show the 'Press Row Scoring'. One had Clottey ahead and another had it tied going into the 11th round. Video here: http://video.aol.com/video-detail/margarito-vs-clottey/615397131 Don't let folk give you the impression that people who believe Clottey wasn't in the fight are crazy. Also, here are the first 2 rounds of the fight. You can clearly see why people believe Clottey could have won had his hands held up. link: http://youtube.com/watch?v=k3N_oC36CIY
