Some poster a few weeks ago said that he had 'never seen film of the oldtimers who had speed like the moderns ". Well i told him that he was mistaken ,because the hand cranked cameras ,skipped, were out of sync, etc. I told him to watch the Battling Nelson / Owen Moran fight on youtube
which he did ,and was impressed. Well he should also watch the bout between Willie Ritchie/Mexican Joe Rivers, where the highly regarded lightweight champ Ritchie kos Rivers in the 11th rd. This Ritchie would be a match for any modern lightweight, including Duran. Fast and durable.
Check it out on Willie Ritchie/Joe Rivers youtube part #3.
Don't let anyone mistake the out of sync hand cranked cameras,as a criteria for the skills of these oldtimers...

they looked like ****, bro. Only chance Ritchie Rich' ass would have against Mano de poodra is during poo. Not pre-poo, not post-poo, but whilst he's sat on the shitter busting out a celebratory banquet he'd just destroyed after a fight which he didnt even train for

I used to think old timers were primitive, but Wilde Vs Villa swayed me, and then I realised I was just being stubborn. Now I realise that this era is probably one of the weakest, in terms of depth and technical nuance.

And we all know that wouldn't hold up against today's titans.

    p,you can't convince a closed mind. I won't try !
Owen Moran looked great against Battling Nelson, but Willie Ritchie didn't impress you.? And Peerless Jim Driscoll,Britain's cleverest fighter, was a stiff ? Wasting my time,I suppose. Cheers...

The film was more primitive than the fighters, there were cornerstones of advancement from bare knuckle boxing and although Johnson was advanced I think Dempsey was a cornerstone (a Tyson before Tyson who could also get off the floor to win) Fighters like Greb and many others of the day (well, what they forgot you will never know) there were fighter with over 200 fights and the experience in the ring is vast and not replaceable. Fighters today learned the value of flash from guys like Ali, Leonard, Sweet -Pea but sometimes guys are all FLASH and No Cash......we will never see the level of SRR, Willie Pep,Archie Moore,Greb,Benny Leonard and others again in the sport of boxing, fighting once a week, 15+ rounds and real training is a rarity in the + 200 division....there have been advancements but there have also been declines as time goes by

Willie Ritchie was the real deal. For an old timer he could really mix up the punches and put them together. The lightweight division was fairly impressive in those days if you ask me. Gans, Ritchie, Welsh, McFarland, even Moran, Wolgast and Nelson knew how to fight, all with different styles of course. Not to mention that one Benny Leonard who later came along.

Unfortunately the action is sped up but I picked some highlights to slow down at the end of the rounds, those are the moments you should focus on if you're too busy to watch the whole film. If anyone cares, I could now also change the whole film to normal speed. I also have footage of the war that was Nelson-Wolgast for those who are interested.

    Even Moran? Huh?
It's too bad Welsh chose to fight on the level too seldom.

I actually meant to say even Nelson and Wolgast. Neither known for any great boxing ability, but they impress against each other, especially Wolgast.

fighters of this era have to be judged within context and by their records. if we look at film, and judge them by modern standards, they appear full of flaws:

    1.hands down throughout the fight
2.Chin up in the air (1:07)
    3.Lunging forward with punches (0:07)
4.Slapping punches with no committment (0:16)
5.Wasted energy throughout, bopping, moving hands with no purpose
    6.Coming forward without a jab (2:07, 2:30)
7.punching and moving COMPLETELY off balance (1:34)
    8.Random awkward shuffle (1:47)
    9.Almost no combination punching (0:28-0:52)

You have a fighter exhibit these traits nowadays, he's not licensed. That's going by the film I just watched, not opinion

Willie Ritchie was a helluva lightweight fighter. He could box,was fast and could hit.
Interestingly, the only man to stop Ritchie, aside from his first bout, was the truly great Benny Leonard...
