Anybody? This has to be the most trumped up "controversy" of the decade. Descriptions like this one kill me. "The super human reflexes Jones had displayed throughout his career seemed dulled by the strain of returning to light heavy. That speed he used to get out of the way of incoming at the last second seemed to have evaporated overnight. But what the fight did was allow Roy to show his heart and he fought hard despite the energetic and hungry performance of Tarver. When the final bell sounded though, it was clear to everyone in the room and watching on TV, that despite Roy having to dig deep and work his way through a fight, his effort wasnt enough. A new star was about to be born. Or so it seemed." - Gabe Montoya :-( 116-112 Jones Jr. Maybe a draw if you stretch it. Dawson - Johnson was controversial. The only reason this one became controversial is because everyone was shocked sh*tless to see Roy actually being hit.
maybe you could score it for tarver if you want to count punches to elbows and forearms as points....Jones may have fought a boring fight, but this was a no brainer, he out boxed tarver against the ropes and won the 11th and 12th
No way did tarver take this. Roy won. I cant exactly remember what i scored it..but i had him winning. it was tough for roy for several reasons.
Tarver basically gave away rounds 5-8 by doing **** all. And looking back, he gave away the fight there. He looked tentative and intimidated during those rounds, but when he poured it on (before and after), he was quite succesful. However, Jones felt it was a close match and fought his heart out to win the 12th and 11th and with it, the bout itself. Something like 7-5 in rounds. Bottomline, just because Tarver exceeded expectations doesn't mean he won the fight. I feel the same about Dawson-Johnson, although that one was closer.
Roy Jones won the 1st fight. The only reason so many people are saying tarver won cuz he made jones look human. Jones has been dominating his opponent prior to the fight so people expected him to do the same to tarver. I had jones winning the fight. It was a close fight but jones deserve the victory.
I didn't score it, but Tarver won cleanly and clearly, IMO. A lot of fans are kidding themselves that Roy won this, he didn't, and I say that despite I myself being a big fan of the man.
Yes... Stevie Wonder had it 118-110 to Tarver Ray Charles - 116-114 - Tarver A member of The Blind Boys of Alabama - 120-108 - Tarver... Thankfully, they weren't the judges...
I dont know how anyone can give Tarver the fight. I would love to see the scorecards of Uliuli, bassie and Hoya-UK
I feel the exact opposite, I firmly believe Tarver was robbed and I struggle to comprehend how anyone could give that fight to Jones. I will watch it again at some point though and see if I still feel as strongly about the decision.
