Absolutely no idea. I haven't seen that fight in years. I just remember scoring it to Tarver at the time. Perhaps if I saw it again I'd think differently, but as I recall I did give it to that ***** Tarver by a couple of points.
I just don't see how anyone can give Tarver the fight when clearly the last two rounds went to Jones and Tarver threw a total of just 12 power punches in rounds 3 thru 5 and landed just 2 of 22 in 6th round
Well damn... after this morning, I thought this thread was fading into Bolivian. Sh*t talking aside, I am actually surprised that some people who usually know their ass from their elbow bought into "Tarver's shining moment". I will definitely find my copy of this one and take a second look. I still think this one was a good example of being caught up emotionally by the underdog. It happens in every sport, at least every sport I watch. Most of us don't grow up with a silver spoon, and seeing a team or an individual appear to overachieve is satisfying. But really, I felt that Roy was dominant enough when he needed to be to put to bed "robbery" claims. The greatest trick Tarver ever played was convincing the world this loss didn't exist.
some great points. Maybe DINAMITA didnt have hes glasses on or simply cant judge a boxing match properly without letting hes emotions get in the way. To to think Tarver actually won is ridiculous. He had the chance to win. Roy seemed really fatigued but he pulled through.
Tarver has been one of the most hated fighters, and most stems from Jones fans who have now crossed over to PBF fans. Tarver won that fight, why else would 10 thousand Roy Jones fans boo the decision when it was announced?
Maybe I will dig it out and re-watch then, on your recommendation. But I do remember having a pretty strong sense that Tarver won. I do find watching post-Ruiz RJJ pretty traumatic though. I was a massive fan in the 90s, it breaks my heart to see his fights from after Ruiz, he was a shell.
You think Jones could move up and beat Adamek now though. And that's why your opinion stopped counting.
Because people were in shock that Jones was even hit that much. First time was outlanded on Compubox stats. Also, how do you give Tarver 8 rounds when we all know he lost the last 2.. and from rounds 3-5 he threw 12 power punches in total. Thats already 5 clear rounds for Jones. And in the 6th, Tarver threw 22 power punches but landed only 2. (His late flurry of the round) the judges gave 3-6 all to Jones. So how the hell did you give Tarver 8?
Well for one, Glen "I Smoke Trees" Hamada came up with 117-111. I said off the bat that my range for this fight was 8-4 to a draw. Some anger is understandable.
Exactly. I think there is some re-writing of history going on here. For me, Tarver clearly won. Jones knew it, Tarver knew it, the commentators knew it, the fans in the arena knew it... and none of that mattered because the judges didn't know it. I will re-visit it though, just to make my initial feeling is still correct.
