Who should Jack Dempsey have given title matches to after beating Willard in 1919?

I disagree. Carpentier's claim to Euro Champdom was a win over the original legend of the china-mandible, Billy Wells EIGHT YEARS earlier. His light heavy crown was the result of what was largely viewed as a set-up against Levinsky....

According to one ringside scribe... "There is hardly a doubt but that Battling Levinsky went into that fight to lose, and that the only part of the program that he did not carry out was that he took the full count in the fourth, when he was expected to do so in the second round. That is easily accounted for. None of the blows which Carpentier landed in the second round looked to have KO force. Levinsky evidently was shamed by the booing of the crowd into getting up and waiting until such time as he could go down from a blow that at least looked like a KO. The blow that landed when he took the full count did not appear to have sufficient behind it to knock out a lightweight."

So, perhaps as a keep busy bout, this would have been acceptable... but as a legit defense, it's extremely sketchy.

Those are solid points. On the other hand, who do you think Dempsey should have fought in 1921?

Who exactly had Wills beaten in1921,22&23 to push his claims for a title shot?

1921.Dempsey's sparring partner Bill Tate,Old ,half blind Sam Langford [no dec]lhyJeff Clarke,Jack Thompson,Andy Thompson,Tate again, washed up GunBoat Smith having his last fight,"I went down for the boat ride".40 years old Denver Ed Martin and guess who? Yup, Tate again[ no dec].
    1922. Tate! A dsq loss , Tate a draw,Old Sam again,lhvy Kid Norfolk,Lhvy jeff Clarke x2,Clem Jackson a sparring partner.Tut Jackson a lhvy.
    1923.Homer Smith ,a trial horse,Jack Thompson.
The sports papers commented on his opposition saying," Wills is being fed on a diet of well chewed meat".

My only quarrel with this post is Carpentier stopped Wells twice with body shots.

Don't speak for me. I think Greb was the 2nd best contender of the times during Dempsey's title run, you buffoon.

A win here for Dempsey would greatly enhance his resumes when you consider that Greb beat some of the same guys Dempsey did, and others he could not ( Tunney and Meehan )! Do you disagree with the last sentence? Yes or No? :D

Wills had already beaten Langford, Fulton, Clark, McVey, Battling Jim Johnson and many others before 1920. Wasn't Fulton one of Dempsey best wins? And didn't Dempsey avoid Langford? That would be a YES.

To suggest Wills wasn't the #1 or #2 contender for Dempsey in 1923 is a reach. Proof? Wills was listed as the top contender by 1924 in Ring Magazine's annual rating. He would be there in 1923. Can you admit this?

Fury already got paid, and Wilder doesn't want to fight Joshua. Tex could not do a thing about that. He might do better in the other divisions.

The top three heavyweight today might only meet once in their prime, and the result was a draw. Pretty pathetic.

You put the dates against the names not me!
I'm saying Wills beat nobody in 21,22,&23 to push his claims for a title shot and the contemporary newspapers agreed with me!
You think Dempsey should have defended against Jim Flynn in1920! That alone disqualifies you from your own thread!lol

Then read what I said. 1923. Dempsey vs. Wills. Now, are you going to argue Wills wasn't the top contender in 1923??!! Yes or No?

As I showed you Wills was the top man in 1924 in the Ring Magazine rankings, which was their debut of rankings. That pretty much ends it.

Yes, I think Dempsey should have attempted to avenge his 1st round KO loss to Flynn. It would have been an easy keep busy type of title defense, with suckers wondering if Flynn could do it again regardless of his age. As history shows, Dempsey did not avenge this very large blemish on his record.

I'm going to argue it was a medium level title defense that was hyped, with the background of Dempsey being a draft dodger. Yeah, Carpentier was a former flyweight, at 172 pounds for Dempsey, but he was a solid boxer type likely ranked in the top ten of the times. So that's okay by me.

I was not aware the fight with Levinsky was a setup. Interesting, it does take away some of his credentials if true. Many think the fight with Battling Siki was fishy, but Siki Ko'd Carpentier anyway. That one is not to hard to see on the web, which brings up a new question!

Should Dempsey have given Siki a title shot? Hmmm...

I don't know where Wills stood regarding the other contenders and neither do you there were no rankings until1924! Do you still not understand? Dempsey ko'd Flynn in one round in 1918 ! Get somebody to explain it to you FFS ! You're the guy who has just described two posters who happen to disagree with you as ,"village idiots"!!!!!!

    WTF ARE YOU ???????

Here is Dempsey's record for 1918.

1918 Jan 24 Homer Smith Racine, Wi KO 1
Feb 4 Carl Morris Buffalo, NY WF 6 Feb 14
"Fireman" Jim Flynn Fort Sheridan, Il KO 1
Feb 25 "K.O." Bill Brennan Milwaukee, Wi KO 6
Mar 16 Fred Saddy Memphis, Tn KO 1

By the way the Homer Smith that Dempsey tucked away in one round that year is one of Wills playmates in1923!

ps You need to stop taking that relaxant!lol

Do you think that Larry Holmes's defense against Micahel Spinks, was acceptable as a stay busy bout, but not a legit title defense?

I cannot say whether Levinsky took a dive, but the evidence is clearly very weak, and it was not Dempsey's job to second guess it.

If you are going to damn Dempsey for not fighting Harry Greb, then you can hardly deny Carpintier some credit for beating Levinsky more convincingly (Some ringsiders scored his previous bout with Greb for Levinsky).

Finally no champion in history has broken box office records, fighting somebody who was not at least seen as a qualified challenger.

I would not go as far as to say that he should have done, but I would not object if he had!

The Spinks/Carpentier analogy is weak sauce. Mike was a long time, dangerous champ who had pretty much run out of opponents, not some guy who sneaked away the title on a dubious bout. And the proof was in the pudding in that Mike was more than competitive with Holmes while Dempsey had to be asked to carry Carpentier. And do we really need to rehash what the vast majority of ring writers thought of this matchup before it occurred?

Again, it was a great event not a great match-up.

Prior to the Carpentier debacle ,for which fight the Frenchman did not train as he thought it was in the bag.Which win of Siki's suggested he belonged in a ring with Dempsey?
