The options : Oscar de la Hoya. Mora would get a big payday and has actually a chance to win the fight. Mora has an awkward style and a good jab, handspeed and ring movement. He is also taller than DLH and we all know that DLH has problems with tall guys. Verno Phillips. Another old fighter. Phillips has just gotten a gift decision against Spinks and it would be the easier way for Mora to unify. The winner of Alcine-Santos. Tough fight for Mora as both Alcine and Santos are very decent fighters. And probably not a big payday. Sergiy Dzinziruk. Another tough fight for Mora as Dzinziruk has a good jab and footwork and is as tall as Mora. Mora would have trouble to get inside and land his uppers and bodyshots. Tough fight for a small payday. Sergio Gabriel Martinez. I have never seen him fight, but he is now the #1 WBC contender. Any other options ?
I think Mora should try and defend that belt ... and milk it for as long as he can ... taking on someone like DLH, Spinks, Simms, Alcine, or Santos would spell his doom. I wouldn't put it past "contender" promotions to set up a defense against one of their fighters maybe ... Bundrage ... or the other season winner Brewer ... maybe on ESPN or Showtime ... He should also avoid Julio ... A quick fight w/ Verno Phillips wouldn't be out of the question either ... a quick unification bout ... a chance to rack up some quick dough ... He should stay away from Bunema as well ... that guy knocked out Karmazin and should be taken seriously.
why wouldn't he? It's not a matchup true boxing fans would like, but.... 1. Mora has name recognition from the Contender...so he's not some unknown. 2. He now has the WBC Junior Middleweight Belt. 3. A win over a named opponent, Vernon Forrest. 4. He has a good following in California, they can easily sell out Staples Center. 5. He's still undefeated. De La Hoya probably still has enough in the tank to beat Mora easily, but GBP will promote this fight and will make Mora look like a real threat.
I just realized Mora already has a mandatory that Forrest has been delaying. Sergio Gabriel Martinez has been waiting to get a crack at the WBC belt since winning an eliminator in 2007. That will probably be Mora's first defense.
I think Verno Phillips would be the lower risk and a high reward (IBF belt). And if Mora wins, he could fight DLH in December.
