LOL, that would be the most active Smoger has been in years and goes completely against his let fighters fight philosophy. There's no reason to expect anything like that out of him; as I said, he was perfectly fine letting Alexander hold Maidana over 120 times in a 10 round fight.

    Gypsy john a fair man.

He only gouged out a mans eye during an arguement over a bottle of beer.

Though he won't get the nod, he's clearly the best choice for this fight, as he won't tolerate any BS. "Letting fighters fight" doesn't equate to "letting fighters hold".

    Alexander/Maidana? Who cares anyway.

Eye gouging would prevent the clinching.

Smoger is probably my favourite ref, he's really into whatever he's reffing, I also like how Richard Steele never stops bouncing around like a madman though.

Let's bring back a former champ to referee ... like Walcott, Dempsey, Louis and others did.

They should have Nicolay Valuev referee.

You need someone who could push those big boys back.

Yes, for Smoger it does translate to "letting fighters hold" as well letting fighters engage in multiple other illegal tactics. He's almost always completely laissez faire in the ring, and the last time he even slightly played the disciplinarian, it was in a clearly biased manner during Hopkins-Murat.

Alexander-Maidana is in fact quite relevant, as that was a clear instance where his "letting fighters fight" philosophy allowed a guy to clinch all night long with no warning even forthcoming. Smoger's just not a very good ref anymore.

Although its not mentioned much, boxing has lost some good refs due to age.

The ref won't matter because this fight won't have a lot of clinching.

    Agree on both points.

This fight is going to be a "fight" in the truest sense of the word, with a low degree of clinching.
