A nutritionist taking over head coach duties for one of the best boxers in the sport?? Cotto has new trainer! By Gabriel F. Cordero WBO welterweight world champion Miguel Cotto has announced that Puerto Rican countryman Joe Santiago is his new trainer. The change came after Cotto parted ways with his uncle and longtime trainer Evangelist Cotto in a highly publicized incident last week. Santiago and Cotto began training this week in Tampa, Florida for the first defense of his title against IBF champ Joshua Clottey on June 13 in Madison Square Garden. Santiago has been with Cotto for a number of years as a nutritionist. Evangelista Cotto had been with Miguel for nearly 16 years.
Probably means things won't change that much from usual training. Might not be a bad idea in the short term, but Cotto should have one of the better trainers in the world helping him progress imo, this could have been a great opportunity to make some positive changes.
I agree. In the long run, he should weigh his options and try to get one of the top trainers - assuming everything goes well against J Clottey. Personally, I'd like to see him under Nacho Berenstein.
