I never heard of this guy.

apparently he fought from 1906-1921, with a pretty underwhelming record of 20-34-12, with a paltry 9 knockouts...

But Wikipedia has him down as having won the lightweight, welterweight, and middleweight championships.
Upon closer inspection of his record however, I do not see any mention of this championship fights.

Looks like he had a 5 fight win streak early on in his career, and a 4 fight win streak a little later, but his career mostly consisted of back to back losses and draws.

He did lose to Jack Dempsey (3x),
lost a couple to Harry Greb, fought a trilogy with Dick Gilbert, drew with Billy Miske and Porky Dan Flynn, and even lost to Sam Langford later on life..

According to Cyber Boxing Zone, the three championships he won were the amateur championships of Utah.

He was a sad story. He was basically an opponent level fighter who suffered terrible punishment in the ring. By the end of his career he had massive lumps of scar tissue over both eyes that he called his "cauliflower eyes" and eventually suffered terribly from puglistic dementia. He was committed to an insane asylum.

Sounds a lot like Joe Grim's story.
