Sugars brilliant hand and foot speed and boxing abilities gave him the early advantage, allowing him to build a large lead on points. He frequently hit Hagler with dazzling combinations and danced around, only to suddenly stop and trade punches with Hagler, often outlanding him by a margin of anywhere between 3-5 to 1. Hagler = Pwned

Me, look at so many of Leonards punches that are skimming the top of the "hair line".
Had Hagler worn hair, it would not be a doubt.
But Duran was up after 12 too. Fool for hagler to make it 12.

I haven't seen the fight in over 10 years, but I remember thinking it could have gone either way legitimately. I watched it twice, and on each occassion I scored it differently. The first time I scored it for Hagler, the second time I scored it for Leonard. Both times I found the action to be very, very close and often it was hard to pick a winner for many of the round.

You could give it to Leonard, arguably, because he scored with more light, grazing punches in some rounds. We're talking rounds in which neither guy landed much of anything.

On the other hand, many of those same rounds could have gone to Hagler because he was backing Leonard up. You could argue that Marvin was executing "controlling actions" and, in some subtle vague way, dictating the pace and tempo of the fight. Again, there was very little to choose between both fighters in this department.

I had Hagler winning but I'm not all that broken up about it. In the end, he paid the price for giving away too many early rounds.

Knowing full well that boxing is scored on a round by round basis, it's foolish to pretty much concede that many rounds. Ironically, the guy who idolizes him, Bernard Hopkins, did the same in his 2 fights with Taylor.

I think the Sugar Ray fans are the one's who are really insecure about the win. That's why they keep on making threads about "Why do you think Hagler won". If you think Leonard won fine, who care's, but there are people who still feel Hagler won the fight. Quit making threads and being salty because some people thought the win was "controversial", get over it.

Take a guess at at how I feel. Hagler is my all time greatest & I havent seen the fight in a while but I bought it from BoxingGalore a couple of mths ago and will check it out againg. I was gonna try to hold off watching it until the middle of a boring arse summer day with only baseball avaialble to watch on but I'll check it out today and get back with you. I've tried to watch this fight impartially in the past & Hagler has always won but now I'll check it out commercial free on my own TV,in the midst of all the other great fights so far this yr. I'll get back at you...

I scored it two rounds for Leonard. If you give away the first 4 rounds in a 12 round fight and fail to really dominate the rest of the fight then theres every chance you are going to be in trouble if it goes to the scorecards.

Nice...coming from a guy who has just now seen the fight for the first and only time.:patsch Anyone who can't understand how this fight was close shouldn't be watching boxing. Leonard was on his bicycle for the most part and was doing a lot of "round-stealing", pitty-pat flurries. In the latter part of the fight, Hagler really began to land effective shots on the inside. Yet, being short inside punches, it was not as impressive to fans as Ray's flashy flurries.

That being said, I still felt Ray won the fight 7-5 with the fight getting closer each additional time that I have seen it. I would recommend that you watch it again, I did and I change my initial thoughts of the fight. IMO, Ray won the fight in the last round when Hagler had him in the corner and Ray, somehow, began throwing combinations out of no where and BACKED Hagler up. This was the telling moment of the fight (probably the 3rd time Leonard did it during the fight however).

This was a great, close, competitive fight. No way was it simply a "boxing-clinic" put on by SRL.

Leonard was very impressive, those flurries off the ropes were amazing.
