I didn't see the fight live, only years later, after getting more into boxing. I thought it was an utter robbery, had Hagler winning 8-4. Leonard didn't do much in that fight but run around, clown around, and throw flashy, little pitty-pat flurries to steal rounds. A shame that Hagler was jobbed like that. Boxing can really be dirty, at times. Style won over substance, that night.

He didn't win and a split decision was generous towards Hagler but, however you rate SRL, Ray coming off a 5 year layoff and beating him, the Antuofermo bout and some other situations ( Roldan) don't get me convinced Hagler was a better MW Champion than Monzon was...

Good point in the highlighted part. People've heard the pro-Leonard propaganda so often, for so many years, that they've bought into the hype. Anyone who doesn't think it was some awe-inspriing performance on SRL's part is thought to not know anything about boxing.

I didn't see the fight until the late 1990's, or so, and was shocked to see that SRL's "mastery" that night was nothing but a load of bullsh*t. Pure hype. I saw someone who looked like they were about to sh*t their pants, running around, landing NOTHING of significance, and throwing weak-ass flurries to try and steal rounds. One judge got it right, anyways.

I guess the fact that SRL ran backwards the whole fight, while Hagler never stopped coming forward REALLY indicates how "brutal" SRL's punches were, right? Moron.

If they are insecure about the the win then they shouldn't be. Coming back off a long lay off to move up in weight to beat possibly p4p 1 fighter at the time was an absolutely incredible feat. What a fighter. Props to Hagler also.

I haven't seen the fight in over 20 years - but I called it at least a draw - then again - I was rooting for Hagler, and I can't guarentee I was objective enough at the age of 16.

    I agree.
One thing to add is effective aggression --- all Hagler.
I personally cant stand piter-pater flurries then hold or run for your life.
Leonard did alot of that --- not really effective aggression.
It was obviously apparent that Hagler was much strong and he did not respect Leonards power (or the lack of) whatsoever.
Leonard, on the other hand, was very popular with a tremendous fan base, whereas, he has approached demigod status.
Many of his loyal fans cannot deal with any opinion which undermines or points out Sugar Ray Leonard shortcomings.

I don't think all Leonards punches were piter pater. When hagler had him in the corner in rd 8 or 9 Leonard came back with some quite hard punches- Hagler looked a little dazed

So are you the son of Jose Guerra and still trying to defend your dad's 118-110 scorecard?
