Who the hell thought a Mayorga vs Cotto fight was a good idea?

If Martinez or Margarito ends up fighting on the card/ split feed co feature, then the card could end up being an acceptable construct, in my eyes.

    Unlikely tho'.

    Hey Eliqueiros, :good

This was a post I made on it, pretty much sums up what I think of the fight. It is indeed an interesting one.

Does Mayorga have 'a shot', of course he does. Prime for prime I would give Mayorga a great chance at actually stopping Miguel, and at the very least giving him hell for 12 hard rounds. And this will have hangover effects to where yes, Mayorga 'can' give Cotto fits in spurts. However, this fight sure isnt 50/50 in my eyes, and to suggest so I think is underrating Cotto, and vastly overrating the version of Mayorga we will be seeing in 2011. (imo)

Not saying I am not going to watch however, of course I will be watching. I am not dissing this fight at all, Cotto fights the who's who of boxing and after this fight will probably be matched up in a fight he is the underdog in. And it is two of my fav fighters of all time. I say this fight sucks because, I dont want to see eather guy lose at this stage, and obviously in this scenario, one of them has to lose. It also sucks because I dont want to see all the abuse Cotto will take pre fight lol. Mayorga will no doubt talk about Cottos family, and God forbid, talk about his recently departed father.

As for the fight itself, if Mayorga can come out with some sort of 'not as good as I once was, but as good once as I ever was' type beginning rounds, almost like he had in some rounds against Mosley, this fight will be very interesting early on.

However, I count on Mayorga being too old, too worn, too slow at this stage (Mayorgas effectiveness against top opponents relied heavily on his underrated quickness and overall athleticism) and hes no longer this unpredictable windmill. He falls into repeatadly lunging in with the same sloppy punches over and over and over. I expect Cotto to be able to outbox him, and when he does get hurt, weather the storm, come back the next round and continue to outbox him.

While it wont surprise me if Cotto is troubled early on by Mayorga, as this fight is still held in the shadow of the fact I think Mayorga is one of Cottos biggest nightmares if this was 4 years ago. That carries over today for me to Mayorga still giving Cotto some fustrations. But it WILL surprise me of Mayorga is able to actually beat Cotto. I confidently make Cotto the heavy fav in this fight, to me, having this fight as 50/50 just because Mayorga 'could hurt' Cotto isnt doing the matchup justice at this stage.

Again, this fight sucks for me. Eather way one of my fav fighters is going to lose, and I am thinking very heavily and comfortably, that it will be Mayorga. And I probably will be rooting for Cotto come fight night, between the abuse he will take pre-fight, and with him having more at stake in this fight, I will be rooting for him to get the W here. Would like to see Cotto regain some momentum and go on to some better fights as well, and his stock would come crashing down should he lose to Mayorga at this stage of the game.

    Just IMO

I dont think Cotto will take Mayorga seriously at all at the press conferances. I think Cotto will remain Cotto, calm, cool, and collected. We will see though. What will be interesting is if Mayorga attempts to smack Cotto like he has with Hoya, Vargas, and Thomas.

I know that Mayorga is essentially done but I'm still intrigued by this fight. Two guys who I've really enjoyed watching in recent years and I'll be happy to see them in the ring. I do expect Cotto to win fairly easily though Mayorga will land a few good shots, no doubt. I don't think Mayorga is as bad as some people say he is and his style may still cause Cotto a few problems.

I also think Cotto deserves this type of fight. Something for him, because it shouldn't be a close fight down the stretch, and it will be a good bout for fans too. It's nothing to go overboard with the praise about, no, but it's a solid, interesting fight. I don't think Mayorga could be involved in a boring build up and I don't think Cotto can be involved in a boring fight, so I'm happy with it.

Cotto deserves a fight of this calibre after the wars he's had. This is a fun and interesting fight that Arum and King have put together.I look forward to it.

    I hope this isn't a ppv......

but other than that, it's an interesting contrast in styles......not exactly a springboard back to the top for Cotto, but it will be a test of his chin.

whats wrong with two B class fighters fighting?

would you rather Mayweather punch him in his head for 36 minutes?

or Pac for 34 minutes lol

Same reason Margarito got a fight against Manny... It will generate money simple as that. Trust me out of the three names they had in mind, Mayorgas name and antics will be whats best when it comes to the business part of boxing.

At this point, Cotto should win, but i could still see Mayorga give him some hell at times.

Prime for prime, Mayorgo rapes him IMO.
