True, his early opposition, hell even most of his title defences were woefully poor, but the Ortiz win legitimizes his reign and proves he's a genuine world class heavyweight and not just a pretender.

It's clearly taken him far longer to develop in comparison to Joshua, Wilder is a late bloomer, I couldn't see Wilder beating Ortiz during his first 21 fights. But I guess that's due to the woeful under funding of the amateur system in the US. Joshua as a top amateur had access at a far earlier stage to a far more professional set up.

Joshua 21: Skelton, Airich, Bakhtov, Zumbano Love, Kevin Johnson, Cornish, Whyte, Martin, Breazeale, Molina, Wlad Klitschko, Takam, Parker

Wilder 21: Cobb, Nichols, Sconiers, Damon Reed, Cota

    LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL.

Wilder only fought 11 opponents who had a positive fight record (first 21)

    AJ is 19/21.

Wilder is apparently something like 14-0 or so. 40-0 is the biggest fluke ever.

His eleventh fight was Dustin Nichols compared to Jason Gavern for Joshua. The very same Jason Gavern that gave Wilder his titleshot at Bermane Stiverne...

Very disrespectful thread to Dustin Nichols. A quote from Wilder's trainer after the Nichols fight:

“I thought once he settled down and used his jab he was really, really good,” Deas said. “I’d prefer he be more disciplined and not leave himself open to getting hit like that. As a trainer, I feel every punch. It’s good for him to get hit a little bit, but against a guy like “Worm” you don’t like him getting hit that much. All it takes is a once-in-a-million punch, and Worm has the power to deliver that.“

Its not the 1st 21 that i shake my head at, thats quite normal for most fighters, its from 25 to about 35 where it didnt really get any better. Not to mention he didnt get much better himself, learned very little.

wilder is still basic and flawed / but he has genuine power/height/leverage and speed

i do not think he is any better now than he was then / team wilder have been very cautious with him

IMO i think wilder forced haymon/finkel to confirm an ortiz fight
they have not backed wilder at all with any money

they were easily outbid by team povetkin in a purse bid scenario

they bid £3.5 million combined for that fight despite the fact that it meant there longtime investment would have to go to russia to defend

it is wilder promoting himself with finkel and haymon along for the ride / if i was wilder being self employed i would have paid them off long ago and self promoted ala david haye.

Yeah but wilder was developing and learning his craft, he wasn't ready yet.
