I do. Just watched this fight. Maybe "dive" is too strong (I'm sure he didnt plan it out in advancem), but did he want to get up? NO. Btw, from reading about this fight, I was led to believe that DLH acquitted himself pretty well and surprised people. But Hopkins DOMINATED this fight. I dont think Oscar landed one significant punch. The first 4-5 rounds, not much happened (though Hopkins was winning). Then Hopkins realized Oscar cant hurt him, and started being much more aggressive (and seemed to be enjoying himself). That's why Oscar didnt get up. On a semi-related note, I wonder if in general boxers who are "too tall" for their weight classes (ie, Oscar at lightweight or Pavlik at middle) are generally overrated boxers, and get exposed when they fight at a more natural weight? (the Ghost is my favorite boxer, but just a thought)
I'm a big Oscar fan, so I hate admitting it... but something was definately strange. I wouldn't at all be suprised if he did take a dive. On the other hand, I wouldn't at all be suprised if it was legit, because liver shots can do that. It just didn't seem all that hard. It kills me to say this, but a KO of Oscar De La Hoya looks very attractive on the resume of a new recruit of Golden Boy Promotions.
No doubts about it, Hoya could be hurt but he could have beaten the count, just didn't cause that would mean that he had no chance whatsoever to win the fight and he gave up at that moment. So, yes, as soon as he felt the pain on the side, dived in all the way.
I have watched that over and over and over.......almost infinity (to the point where I can hear the dude yellin "body shot, body shot, Oh Oscar, body shot" in my dreams!), but it is fishy as hell and I can not see that being either powerful or clean.
He didnt take no damn dive.... That was one of the cleanest body punches in the history of the sport.
two things- -I meant, could have gotten up but chose not to. I guess "quit" would be a better word than "dive." -Yes, I have been hit in the liver. Just not by Bernard Hopkins! I'm not saying its not possible that he was legitimately that hurt by the punch, I just tend to think he wasnt. As PBF said, he had the energy to pound the mat! Also, if DLH is 5-11.5 and B-Hop is 6-1, it sure didnt look that way. Seemed like Hopkins had at least three inches on him
Well I was one of those who originally thought DLH took a dive. But after seeing a lot of fighters go down from a very similar punch . . . I change my point of view and I won't insist on that now. Means I still have my doubts but not as strong as it was before. :yep
That pounding the mat seemed a little too WWE... but to be fair, I have never been liver-punched by Hopkins.
