Who was a better fighter, Groves or Saunders

Groves.

 

Saunders the better/smarter boxer, Groves with the greater internal fire and the powerhouse athleticism.

 

Saunders could've have been so much more, Groves couldn't, so Saunders.

 

Groves was a better fighter than BJS.

BJS is massively over rated. He quit like a ***** against Canelo, on the biggest stage he got hit hard and shouted ‘no mas’. Let’s be clear here, he never had a broken eye socket in that fight and he quit.

When Groves got onto the biggest stage he knuckled down and went out on his shield against Froch. He also won a world title against a top fighter, and beat world level opponents.

Groves will forever be above BJS as a man and a boxer.

 

Deffo. BJS also didn't have enough pop for the highest level IMO.

Billy will look back on his career having earned a good load of money and being a 2 weight world champion which is fantastic.... but there will still be "What ifs".

In terms of natural ability then Saunders is ahead of Groves but I think the fact that it all came so easy to Billy was his downfall.... the Lemieux performance was pure brilliance that impressed everyone but instead of capitalising on it, he coasted by, fought a bunch of no-hopers and an ageing Martin Murray before fighting Canelo (carrying zero momentum into the fight against an elite fighter fighting 3 x a year).

Groves on the other hand, whilst not as gifted a natural boxer as Billy, was a talented boxer in his own right and had arguably the best jab in British boxing during his time plus carried serious power in the right hand. Put Froch flat on his back and Martin Murray (who also fought GGG) said Groves hit him the hardest he's ever been hit. Came up short giving Froch all he could handle short but showed serious bollocks, grit, determination and outright sheer will to get his hands on a world title.

Beat Eubank and Murray more convincingly than Saunders also.

Groves recently said he was offered the BJS fight after Callum Smith but his mind was firmly in retirement. Put himself through hell to try and be fit for the Smith fight after the shoulder injury and rushed it given the pressure by the powers that be to get the final plus having to go back to the well so many times to get his hands on a world title along with the unfortnate Eddie Gutkneckt injury. Made his money and got out, fair play to him.

Saunders' talent was/is sensational. Groves really wasn't anywhere near that level of talent. If Saunders doesn't box again, then he can go out with his head held high. He was boxing circles around Alvarez, making the little Mexican look silly at times. He got caught with a lucky punch from the gods and that was it. It can happen to anyone. His father was also a sensation during the pre-fight build-up. What a revelation he was. It's a shame there wasn't more from him during his career. He leaves the sport with plenty of money, lots of fans and great memories. A two-weight world champion - the best in the world, at one point in time.

Groves was robbed in the first Froch bout but looked like a shadow thereafter. The bout in which he won a portion of the title was very underwhelming. Crap opponent and had to be stopped on his feet and then forcefully lifted aloft as if he had actually won something big. You could tell that it wasn't ever going to fill the void of the robbery etc. He did beat Eubank which was a monumental win against a genuine top opponent.

 

P4p groves ktfo Billy, no need to talk about skill or talent

 

Groves better in my opinion, BJS doesn’t have a signature win in my eyes/didn’t really fight the top guys/far too inactive.

I always feel groves is very underrated and BJS is vastly overrated. Then again maybe I’m totally biased as BJS is a complete pipe.

 

Groves.

BJS has been a pro for 15 years odd and has only fought one elite name, lost that, beat a decent fighter in Lee, a 30 year old prospect in Eubank, and not done much else.

Groves by a large margin.

 

Eubank was 25. Only in your mind was Eubank 30.

 

Better boxer Saunders if you rate defensive elusive skills and footwork highly.

Better fighter Groves. Groves more had power, punch selection, and grit.

 

Groves easily for me. Groves was heavy handed and that was far better to watch than Saunders brushing people's faces for 10-12 rounds.

 

Saunders on his day could be a handful for anyone, when he came in not motivated hed make hard work of overmatched opponents.


Groves would batter overmatched opponents impressively. Groves was pretty explosive.
