Carl Williams was much better. Far harder puncher, crisper offensively and much stronger mentally. Biggs probably had better feets at his peak but that's it. And, adding to all that, while Williams wasn't the most durable guy, he could definitely take a better punch than Biggs. I mean, shot Williams went 9-10 rounds with prime versions of hard-hitting guys like Morrison and Bruno, while shot Biggs was knocked out cold in 2 rounds by feather-fisted Larry Donald
Both talented but I think Williams had better showings against notable Heavyweights. Williams had a strong argument to beating Larry Holmes, he beat Berbick comfortably, unlucky to lose a SD to Witherspoon. Biggs's problem was he liked to mix it up too much instead of using his boxing skills along with his height, reach, advantages. The writing was on the wall when Biggs barely escaped against David Bey in a life and death struggle. I also think overall Biggs was rushed into the Tyson fight a bit too soon. Williams problem was he was vulnerable to left hooks and his chin was a bit shaky. But he had one of the best left jabs in history and his 6'5 frame along with his 85 inch reach was tough to contend with at his best. But overall like I said I think Williams had more notable showings and he was ranked as high as number 2 in the rankings where as Biggs peaked at number 9.
Although they have similar records, Williams was better fighter, better athlete and harder puncher. Holmes and Spoon went life and death against Williams, Biggs never had similar success against A level opponents Carl Williams also had better list of wins vs Berbick, and near-prime Cooper, Ferguson and Tillis
They were signed and supposed to fight so many times in 1990 it feels like they fought. I remember being really excited for it, and then being disappointed over and over. At the start, it was supposed to be Carl Williams vs Tyrell Biggs and Tim Witherspoon vs. Jeff Sims in a doubleheader on USA's Thursday Night Fights (before they moved to Tuesdays) in early 1990. But days before, Williams pulled out. So Biggs fought Ocasio as a late sub. Then they were supposed to fight in March, but Williams pulled out again. Biggs ended up fighting late sub Rick Keller. Then I think they were supposed to fight another time that year, but maybe Biggs pulled out the last time (or maybe it was Williams, again, I can't recall now). Then Biggs got a network fight with Riddick Bowe in early 1991, and Williams fought Tim Witherspoon on a cheap PPV, and the Williams-Biggs fight was kinda forgotten. 1990 would've been an interesting time to do it. It would've been Williams' first fight back since the Tyson blowout loss. Biggs had lost three in a row to Tyson, Damiani and Mason, but he was making a comeback and winning small fights. Getting his confidence back. When Biggs ended up fighting Bowe in 1991, Tyrell was in really good shape and it was a good fight while it lasted. It was a case where Biggs had the much better amateur career and Carl was clearly a better pro. But I think either could've won in 1990.
