He never won the mega fights, had he beaten Tito (the fizzle factor) he could possibly have surpassed Oscar as the 'golden boy'. This is only my take, your idea of superstardom is obviously different to my own.

HOw can you guys say that Vargas was not a superstar? He had everything that a superstar should have

Arenas selling out within ours of tickets going on sale, check
Multiple multi million dollar purses, check
    Mainstream exposure, check
    Locked down HBO contract, check
    His own clothing line, check
    High PPV numbers, check
Fights with hall of famers, check
Fights that make your all time favs, check
Wins over hall of famers, check
    World championships, check
World records (youngest jr middle champ ever), check

In his time there is a very small handfull of guys that were on his level of starpower. If you don't consider him a super star then who can you consider a super star.

I'd consider Vargas to be a champion who, outside the ring had star status but came up short every time he had the chance to prove he was a star inside it. KO-ed by Tito, Oscar and Mosley twice, he no doubt had a very solid fanbase and made a lot of money, but if Ali had lost to Frazier 3 out of 3 and Foreman, would we be talking about him as a superstar of BOXING?

It's way too soon to make a call on Berto. First off I don't think he was ever a lock to be a star. Secdonly heis still undefeated, probably hasn't even entered his prime and we don't know what will come from him.

Berto is a journeyman as soon as the next fight..once he fights someone with a punch and a decent chin, berto is OUTTA THERE!!! Marg would waste him, hell Hatton would take his heart in 8 rounds

Vargas came up short against those 2 but has 2 huge wins over Quartey and Wright. Not to mention that being a star has nothing to do with how good you are but how good you can sell yourself. Gatti was never an elite guy but his starpower dawrfed that of guys 10 times better than him

My opinion of being a superstar in a sport would be having the ability to appeal to the masses and being at the pinnacle of the sport in terms of ability and achievement. Tiger Woods, Michael Jordan, David Beckham, Muhammed Ali... I just don't think Vargas' in ring career warrants him to be labelled a superstar.

By your definition of star not a single guy mentioned so far fits the description because none of them was ever a lock to be a superstar.

Vargas had the potential to fit the bill. Nobody is a 'lock' to be a superstar, certainly there are factors that can help judge the chances ie Oscar being a gold medallist with a sob story to endear him to the public, but I'd be willing to bet there's not one up and coming boxer today you can tell me is a 'lock' to be a superstar. The last teen prodigy in the US I recall given this label was Michelle Wie the female golfer, where is she now?
