In his book Schmeling states that he lost the first three rounds, but was sure that Sharkey would blow up, so he could win over a longer distance.

Between Sharkey and Schmeling who do you think was actually the better man? I mean, one fight Schmeling won by DQ and in the other he lost by a controversial decision. I haven't actually watched the fights, so I can't really decide.

Schmeling was the more important historical figure because of his victory over Louis. Without it, there would not be much to choose. Both were erratic, beating some good men, losing badly to other good men, and blowing fights to men they were expected to defeat.

It's an ugly point in Heavyweight boxing.

Sharkey was comfortably tattooing Schmeling and then lost on a highly unfortunate punch.

Sharkey, in shape and on his game, as he was here, out-muscled and roughed Max up with his slick shots. He was getting off before Schmeling and dictating the pace with his greater natural ability.

Ted Spoon does not believe that Schmeling would have been able to fend Sharkey off that night, not at his best. He would of followed through like he did later in his first meeting with Carnera and worked Schemling over.

Max did not possess the necessary rough antics or pressing ways to rattle Sharkey enough, like say Dempsey did to cool him off.

Before the fight came to close, Max was not just being out-fought but started to get beat up. It's a chapter along with the Carnera one that has held Sharkey back from being recognized as a special talent in the Heavyweight division.

I always liked to watch fights of Jack Sharkey. He and Schmeling fought on a similar level. But Max had very good nerves, he always was calm and concentrated. Sharkey sometimes had a temperamental nature, which was a disadvantage in some fights (Heeney, Walker). Schmeling was sometimes a "slow starter" but strong in the middle - and later rounds.
