It seems this forum can't get enough of these three beloved contenders from the 70's, so why not one more post? It's an interesting round-robin:
Shavers beats (and draws with) Young, Young beats Lyle twice, and Lyle beats Shavers (with some controversy). Who do you consider the greatest of the three?

My vote goes to Earnie. Why? I truly think he decisioned Ali. Earnie also hit Lyle so hard, that his knockdown of him would, nowadays, result in a TKO. Earnie also came very close to beating Holmes.

That's my take on it, but I think an argument could be made for the others, too.

:lol:you're right and when i saw this thread i thought "****, the classic is going to collectively orgasm when they see lyle and young's name in the same thread"

for me, it's shavers. Lyle is RIDICULOUSLY overrated on this board essentially for taking the eric crumble route and losing to just about every decent fighter he took on. young had skills but again, more known for loses to ali and norton (with controversy) than any win save foreman. young was probably BETTER than shavers but based on resume and top tier performances, shavers may edge it

btw: i've not watched the shavers holmes fights but from all i read they were nowhere near close

The ****? The guy had a golden resume in a golden age of heavyweights, and faced more of the roster of the best 70's heavies then anyone else except for Ali.

Glad we agree, Jorodz. Shavers-Holmes I was a mismatch, and the second one would've been too, if not for Earnie's 7th round bomb that evenened things up a bit. Earnie got thumbed too, or so he claims.

You could make an argument as to who is the best of these three for any one of them. Young defeated Foreman and gave Ali a closer fight than the other two. Shavers obviously hit harder than Lyle or Young. Lyle KOed Shavers which Young couldn't do. Of the three Shavers had to be my own personal favorite because of the excitement and drama of that wicked right hand bomb that he carried into the ring with him. You just never knew what was going to happen if he landed it on an opponent.

You could throw in Roy Williams, as he beat Jimmy Young, and came within
one-punch from knocking out Earnie, and had Larry Holmes near the loss door-step
    several times.

Don't forget, in his 'two' most critical fights where he needed a win, even it was a bad win,,,,,,,,,,,Jimmy lost to Ossie Ocassio,,,,twice.
And no excuses, Jimmy was still in his prime 90% range.

There is no best, they're all equally good.

could argue this back and forth all day long, but when it comes down to it, lyle doesn't have a big win, so it's between the other two. young beat foreman and shavers beat norton. shavers probably takes it for having more memorable moments than young (giving ali a beating and flooring holmes). i also feel shavers did better than young against ali, a measuring stick if ever there were one! but yeah it's really close, just not lyle...

oh god just remembered young fighting well against norton. so difficult.

a fight that passed me by, not such a bad thing by the sound of it!

who do you think did better against a fading ali, young or shavers? do you think either should have got the nod?
