But we are talking about prime and not prime, and Ray was not prime in June of 1980. The fact he lost the fight proves it, since had he fought like he did later, he would have beaten Duran easily. Mayweather now is not like Ray in 1980. Mayweather is experienced, and he never did have the fighting spirit Ray Leonard did.
Pacquiao got to fight his "fab 4" at his ideal weight classes. Duran had to fight in a "fab 4" that was many weight classes above his best. End case. Duran had to fight legendary giants and Pacquiao has recently at similar weight, fought weight drained and or average fighters. What Pacquiao has done at 147lbs is not even a pubic hair out of the SRL/Hearns/Hagler/Duran/Benitez era. Not even a ****ing pubic hair. Get your heads straight little ones.
Ray was prime, duran was just that good. When duran was completely prepared and hungry he proved he had ray's number. After reining as the greatest lightweight in history and beating the second greatest welterweight in history I guess duran lost his hunger. At 154 he was fighting 20 pounds above his pride weight suffering bad losses to laing and benitez but he also beat moore and pushed hagler the distance. A badly faded duran fought hearns fight and lost but he still had enough to beat the man that had iced hearns just before. All you need to know about duran is the hungry prime version ruled the lightweight division in the 70's and scored the greatest victory of the 80's against top 15 atg leonard. Past his prime he still fought the best guys in the world putting in great performances well above his prime weight.
I'll let others knit-pick who was better, but I can tell you for sure, Duran -- in his prime-- caste a more fearsome image. No one wanted to get in the ring with him without a whip and a chair. He was a snarling Rottweiler. Manny's destructive, but he's a happy warrior.
Dude, DURAN lost a lot of fights where it really matters...lost to SRL (though he won the first figth!), lost to Benitez, lost to Laing class b fighter, lost to Hagler and lost to Hearns..and A LOT MORE LOSSES which I don't have to list! Pubic hair your ass!!!!
At the end of the day, maximum respect has to be given to Duran for going up to an uncomfortable weight and face 3, yes 3 all-time greats at a weight that was ok to them. As much as i love Pac, he has yet to do such a thing. Roach openly admits he doesn't want to put his man at a disadvantage so regularly ops for catch weights that level, or give advatage to Pac, depending on how you look at it. Although he has faced good opposition at WW, they are not great. The only great boxer Pac can face is Floyd, and that is being delayed and delayed and delayed. SRL faced the fearsome Duran on his 2nd defence!!!!
this is a good argument in favor of Duran in my mind. The catchweight stuff does diminish the guys who Pacman fought. Regardless of anything, Duran did fight guys when they were at their best and championship weights.
Duran only faced Leonard in his prime. Pacquiao only faced JMM in his prime. Duran marched 72-1 in his prime. Pac was ktfo by bums and lost a is to an older Morales. No brainer:good
