How would you compare two of Nacho Beristain's best students? Both fought in a similar textbook style, although Lopez looked more perfect while Marquez beat better competition.

In terms of accomplishments, skills and abilities in the ring who would you say was better in your opinion?

Two great fighters Finito was textbook and a joy to watch his resume is not as good as JMM's some of it his fault some not. I'd give the edge to JMM based on resume but both IMO are equally skilled.

Marquez easily. His resume is far too superior. Recent discussions and debates have been disqualifying Lopez from ATGhood recently whereas Marquez is a surefire lock. Finito was a bit more textbook but who...who cares. Marquez was just as technical early on in his career and evolved.

I would have loved to see Ricardo Lopez fighting against Mark Too Sharp Johnson, Carbajal, Gonzalez, Arbachakov, or even Johnny Tapia. That would have helped his resume a lot had he fought any of them.

Love both boxers but to me Ricardo López Nava was more dominant, better footwork, better defense and made an pefect example how spectacular a boxer can be by perfecting the basics. This may be also because no one stood at his level in his division at those times, but not his fault.

My thing is I can never conclusively say a fighter had better general abilities when fighting much weaker opposition. We don't know how Lopez's footwork or defense would look against a Pacquiao. We'd have to imagine he's better than he showed to give him credit over JMM in that regard.

Richardo Lopez was damn near perfect! Had every tool you can ask for. JMM has better names on his resume. I was hoping for a carbajal fight but Finito never moved up in weight. By today's standards, you have to be a multi-division champ or your ATG HOF status plummets, which is sad IMO.

I'll give Lopez the edge in defense, footwork and power. He was a more mobile pure boxer who also had one punch power. I think Marquez had better offensive tools, especially his counter punching and combinations, since he took more chances and was also better at adapting to his opponents. It's just a shame that Lopez never got battle tested against higher competition, save for Rosendo Alvarez who gave him a tough fight. I get the feeling that if Lopez were to be fighting today he'd be the equivalent of Golovkin who was dominant against so-so competition and would be heavily criticized for staying in one division for so long.

Marquez wins the battle of the resumes but IMO, Lopez was more technically sound.

jmm seems to have copied finito's style and improved it. It is good that jmm has a good fighting heart and ring IQ. he even improved a lot with the pac fights with great motivation every time just to stop the mexican terminator. with that said, jmm is the better fighter due to his resume having fought different styles, tough competition, and their magnificent fights with the atg pac.

I don't think that Lopez could have handled the level of opposition that JMM faced. JMM is better.

From everything we've seen of Lopez, it's not hard to imagine that a 135-147 version of him would not have had, in the very least, the success that Marquez had.
