Leonard was rated 5th in a list of the greatest 50 fighters P4P in the last 50 years by the ring magazine in `97, Chavez was rated 6th, which fighter was actually better P4P? Leonard`s info by the ring magazine: Quality of competition: 10 Bouts v top 50 fighters: 4 Why he was on the list: The dominant fighter of the 80`s, he was every bit as good as the hype. What he could have done to better his ranking: Not much. His career was close to perfect. Chavez`s info: Quality of competition: 9 Bouts v Top 50 fighters: 1 Why he was on the list: Enjoyed a lengthy stay at the top of the P4P ratings. What he could have done to improve his ranking: Kayoed Pernell Whitaker.
Leonard was just boxing at a higher level. Chavez didn't have the athleticism to be up there with Leonard
It's a tough one. Quality vs quantity. If Chavez had done better in a rematch against Whitaker, I might have given the nod time to him but as it is this one is probably what swings it in Sugar's favour imo.
I actually want to say, I don't want to detract from Chavez by rating Leonard over him. Chavez foundamentals, defense, footwork, timing, toughness, boxing intelligence are all A Class And they both knocked out a Mayweather (I realise this is easy likes on this forum haha)
It is tough but clear. Ray had much fewer fights but those 4 guys he beat were so great themselves that it elevates him to a special place. And he knew if he got in the 2 fights in 1989 against Hearns and Duran that would add to the legacy and give him fighter of the decade. Ray was lucky he had those guys, yet he had to go through hell to beat them. Chavez couldn't have beaten all of those 4. He never beat that level too easily. He has more wins against contenders. Many more. But Benitez,Duran,Hearns and Hagler are the tops. Chavez cannot compete with that. And nothing Chavez can do can match it.
Good point but when you mention the matches in 89 v Duran and Hearns by that time P4P Chavez was better than Ray, Duran and Hearns, Ray wa not at his best in those two bouts at all.
If there's a case for Chavez... I don't see it. Longevity isn't enough. Leonard had the much better resume, and was just better overall. He was a level above Chavez. Duran/Leonard were both a different caliber than Chavez IMO. It comes down to the fact that they were every bit as skilled while being far more physically talented.
It's no slight against Chavez, either. He's top 20-25 all time. But I have Leonard in my top 5-6 along with Robinson, Duran, Armstong, Ali, and Pep.
