He fought Tua in 97, gained a ranking after beating Rahman in 99, and I believe gained a top five ranking after beating Jefferson in his next fight.

 

Moorer was a former world champ. Rahman, Maskaev and Ruiz were future champs.

Ellis was a former champ at the end of his career.

The point is, Tua destroyed them, whereas Lyle went the distance with Ellis who was at the end of his career.

 

Maskaev was highly rated long before that. I believe he was in the top 5 of the WBA ratings when he knocked out Hasim Rahman in 1999 (two years after the Tua fight) and he was in the top 5 when he lost by shocking upset to Kirk Johnson in 2000.

He was in line for a title shot in 2000 when Kirk stunned him (and everyone else) and the wheels came off.

 

Correction: Lyle beat LeDoux, was not flattened by him.
Tua had the better career overall. He was considered as a potential champ, whereas Lyle was respected but I don’t think many thought of him as a future champ.
Shavers pretty much knocked Lyle out, but a generous hometown ref let it continue. Tua would be Earnie but with stamina.

 

probably Tua. Better record. Never stopped. Comparable quality in wins but more emphatic performances. I think his chin and power are superior. His left hook would have been a problem for a lot of guys. Not much more I can think to go by unless you bring intangibles into the picture which is a science I don’t dabble much in.

Both were more of the same H2H. Unremarkable in the grand scheme really. Lyle is the more interesting read/character.

That's a valid point. Lyle's best wins (Shavers and Bugner) were closer than Tua's. And you'd think he'd stop Ellis at that point as well.

 

I can’t see Young losing to Quarry. I think he also has a better to decent chance against Young as well.
