Who was boxing's first widely known cherrypicker?

    EDIT: might as well include this in the OP:

    When I think cherrypick, I think something more along the lines of a fighter biding his time and careful planning until another fighter is in a disadvantageous position so he can take him out. Kind of like what Leonard did to Duran in the rematch and against Hagler. Draining and bloating per contract is a secondary form of cherrypick but not as "well defined" for lack of better words. OR you can cherrypick cab-drivers/shot fighters by making them out to be more serious opposition than they really are.

    floyd patterson was horrible for weak cherrypicking, all d'amato's doing but yeah patterson for sure

    Jack Dempsey was a cherry picker, Jack Johnson beat everyone but as a champion should have given the men he'd previously beat rematches, Jeffries ducked Johnson when he was champion to retire. Cherry picking has gone on for as long as the sport has and it makes allot of sense to pick and choose your fights, lions cherry pick other lions in the wild too, you should go upto 1 and call it a cherry picker

    Cherry-picking is a clithe'. Almost every fighter cherry/hand-picks to a certain-degree these days. Every top world champion cherry picks ... Pacquaio, Floyd, LEnnox, Wladimir, Vitali, Calzaghe, De La Hoya, etc etc etc. Any top fighter with a top promoter behind him will be a cherry picker.

    Haven't followed Dempsey's career too closely, but from what I've read on Johnson, not giving Langford his rematch was more of a duck rather than a cherrypick imo. Same goes with Jeffries which was a duck until he was forced to fight due to public demand. If we're talking duckers we might as well go back to Sullivan since he didn't fight black fighters.
