There is so much violence on this forum, it's terrible. For a change, let's have a lovely chat about these two civil rights icons - which one is cooler and why? Speak!
A friends Father worked for Joe Louis on his Farm in Utica,Mi.He said Joe Louis could walk through a door and his Shoulders would just frame the Door.
O.K. lets try this one then. When Joe Louis won the title,he bought his Mother a House down on Grand River. My Father, when he was young, sold Fruit in that neighborhood,as he lived nearby. He said Joe Louis would occasionaly buy Apples and Watermelons from him.And Joe Louis was way cooler then Ali or Johnson.
Louis was refereeing a bout in a young Marcianos area and when he went to take a **** Marciano and his friend followed him into the toilets to meet their hero, Louis gave each of the boys a few dollars as a treat. Class guy I am Legend, your post cracked me up!!
I think Jack Johnson was cooler than Muhamad Ali. When pulled over for speeding and told that he was fined $40 he replied- "Heres $80. Im coming back the same way". When he hit Jim Jeffriews with an uppercut and forced him to clinch he said- "If you love he Jeff Il hug you all you want".
Louis reportedly once found some Indians camping out on his estate and tried to evict them. He ended up giving them a cotage on his land to stay in over the winter.
I don't think Muhammad Ali was cool.I don't like his politics-and I think his boxing is overrated because of his politics.By the way,he referred to referree Tony Perez as "a dirty dog of a Puerto Rican" after the Chuck Wepner fight.I think Jack Johnson was cool(although I think his boxing was overrated)-and really was on the front lines confronting Jack London's "white hope" society.
Ageed. And you can also mention Floyd Patterson, that is if you consider being a dignified, literate, class act MAN as "cool". Floyd went against the grain in many ways from the way a fighter is expected to behave. It isn't a thing of where he ranked in terms of fighting ability alone, but the way he conducted himself as a human being, in gracing the sport with certain qualities that really count more than merely fighting abilities. You could mention Jersey Joe Walcott and Ezzard Charles too in this category. "Cool" is often a matter of hype and trendy political opinions generated by the media, and obviously Ali was the media darling.
Jack was cooler, and more sophisticated.Ali was cool, to a certain degree, but was a bit of a poser, and square.
Johnson is the coolest person of sports. Period. He might be the coolest famous person of the 20th century. Love Muhammed, but this isn't close.
