This is a popular tale from Johnson's adventures. I heard the story was Johnson got pulled over and the cop said it would cost him $50. He pulls out his wad of cash and hands the cop a $100, the cop says he doesn't have change, Johnson says "keep the change, I'll be coming back the same way." Say what you want about Unforgiveable Blackness but I thought the movie provided some insight. It was a story that went around the precincts. You hear about it from boxing old timers who exercised and trained in the different PAL gyms. Wonder what that $100 would be worth today if it was the bill in the ticket. As for the thread? Can't really say who's cooler? If we're talking from a historical/societal/behavioural perspective, I'd say Johnson was cooler. He was a bluesman, a very good bass player that played gigs in between fights. To be a black man boldly dating white women in his time was beyond ballsy. This not too long after 1865 and years before 1965. Ali was said to be an amazing man with the children. Always joking and playing with them when he could and handing out his dollars to them. Maybe this alone makes him cooler?
JACK JOHNSON FAINTS IN BELGIAN MAT BOUT BRUSSELS, Jan. 16, 1933 (UP) "Jack Johnson, former world heavyweight boxing champion, today was recovering from severe bruises and physical collapse suffered Saturday night (1/14) when he was thrown from the ring in a wrestling bout with Sailor Constant of Belgium. The Belgian picked up the aging Negro and tossed him from the ring to the floor below. Johnson tried to struggle to his feet, but fainted. Sailor Constant was awarded the victory. Johnson went to Berlin, Germany recently to organize a boxing school, but accepted invitations to do some wrestling on the side. Johnson will be 55 years old in March. " This is on a par with Jesse Owens racing jack rabbits on a track, scuffling for small change
Who else comes even close to this top three? 3. The thing with the speeding ticket and the hundred dollar bill: "Keep the change, I'm coming back the same way. 2. Bumraping Jeffries with a grin on his face in front of a multi-thousand crowd who wants nothing more than to lynch him (literally so). (drumroll) 1. Walking in among a crowd of whites with a sock in his pants (probably after an all-nighter of ****ing the brains out of his white wife). What's Monzon's top three? 3. Looking ice-cold, 2. slapping around a poor old guy who won't let him change his hotel room on a whim and 1. murdering his wife?
The coolest thing a hw champ ever did probably was hiding and smuggling some jews out of Nazi-Germany.

And when someone officially add Marvelous before his name, cool or no ? Shouldn't be cool, but it was... just like his red hat. :hat
Adding another name : Qawi with his whole I'm 5 foot 6 fighting heavyweights with a huge grin on my face, so what ? :bbb
I don't think the crowd wanted to lynch him. They were fight fans. They were almost all partisan whites, probably hated that the champion was black, and disliked Johnson's character. That doesn't mean wanted to murder him.
Jack Johnson by a land-slide. The cool thing about being cool, is not trying to be cool. Jack Johnson, had Stepin Fetchit as his friend when he was popular. Cassius Clay had to borrow a washed up Stepin Fetchit to try to be cool, which is totally 'uncool'.
