I'm going to assume that the absolute best versions of Watson and Eubank would have beaten him. A fight with a prime version of Benn would have been very intriguing though. A great clash of styles. I'd also have loved to have seen Benn fight McCallum.
And Collins got hit alot in the Johnson bout . Got dropped against Watts. And Eubank. Meanwhile Watson almost BEAT a prime Eubank.
Michael Watson looked phenomenal in their second fight, like a totally different fighter from the first fight and the McCallum fight. He was the best.
Lindell Holmes was also very very good offensively and defensively but was just flat-footed with a short reach. His technical skills were about as good as they get though. Great power, too. Holmes looked classes above Collins in technique, Collins was actually chief support to Eubank-Holmes and it was supposed to be a warm-up for Nunn or Toney for Chris.
Collins didn't do better against McCallum than the ring rusty Michael. Mike used Steve as a warm-up for the big Watson fight - target practice. The first five rounds were hideously one-sided, whereas McCallum-Watson was nip and tuck for five rounds til the body shot counters kicked in.
Eubank actually dominated Watson for the first five in their middleweight title fight, in one of the best displays seen by a British boxer for me. It was only the last three Chris ran out of steam and Watson picked them up to close the fight tight.
Did I hear someone say Watson beat Benn easily!? WTF! Benn was an ANIMAL in that fight, Watson came out with his arms black and blue and had to be literally punch perfect or he'd of been wiped out by that phenomenon! Watson blocked a lot of McCallum's work but got countered for using the wrong tactics (all out attack) due to his ring rust. Watson was actually the pre-fight favourite.
I agree Fergy. Also Eubank of the first Benn fight was a hungry fighter( I thought he softened up, especially after Watson), Benn may have fought the best Eubank that there ever was that night, he wouldn't be denied
He went under the radar for years, a little bit was his fault, but there's no denying he was a very special fighter, and one of the most adaptable fighters I have ever watched. My favourite fighter The Welsh Dragon is/was
Calzaghe had an effective style. He was good. But got away with pulling out of more world title defences than any fighter in history (at least six), which is disgraceful.
It would be interesting to see how the likes of Benn,Watson, Calzaghe and Collins would have done against Carl ‘the cat’ Thompson. Not that Thompson was a better fighter than them but he was a cruiserweight and was pretty heavy handed. Eubank did well against Thompson in both their fights though the difference in weight and size was clearly noticeable.
Thompson was more of a Heavyweight than a Cruiser, 215+ shredded. He'd of knocked those guys out with a jab in the first round. Eubank was a freak.
